QVT Term Documentation

QVT/Term is a communication software application for the Microsoft Windows operating system that provides telnet capabilities that will allow your PC to connect to a remote computer. Telnet means using the resources of a remote computer. With QVT/Term, you can connect to a computer account on ADMIN, Bayou, or the www.uh.edu Central Web Server ftp-web.uh.edu. Information Technology provides a 32-bit version, which is compatible with Windows XP, as well as Windows 2000, NT 4, and 95/98.

Obtaining QVT/Term

If QVT/Term 5 is already installed on the computer you are using, skip to Starting to use QVT/Term.

Using Netscape or Internet Explorer, access QVT/Term on IT's Software Web site.

Using Internet Explorer, left-click on the download link, labeled Download QVT 5, under Obtaining this software. First a dialog box will appear asking if the customer wants to save the program. Click on Save this program to disk and then click on OK. Next a dialog box will appear requesting a destination for the file QVTTerm5_1_4.exe. Take note of the destination directory so you will know where the installation files will be saved. Click on OK. Internet Explorer will begin to download the file to the specified directory.

With Netscape, hold down the Shift key and left-click on the download link, labeled Download QVT 5, under Obtaining this software. A dialog box will appear requesting a destination for the file. Take note of the destination directory so you will know where the installation files will be saved. Click on OK. Netscape will begin to download the file QVTTerm5_1_4.exe to the specified directory.

Installing QVT/Term

To install QVT/Term, open My Computer by clicking on the icon on the desktop or clicking on the Start menu and selecting My Computer. Navigate to the directory where the file was saved in the download process. In My Computer, a file called either QVTTerm5_1_4.exe will be visible, double-click the file. This will start the installation of QVT/Term.

Follow the dialogs and accept the default settings by clicking on Next at each dialog, and the program will install. At the final dialog, click on Finish to complete the install and exit.

Starting to use QVT/Term

To start using QVT/Term, click on the Start menu and then click on Programs, next click on the new application group labeled QvtTerm and click on the QVT-Term icon. The QVT/Term application will start up.

To connect a remote session, click on the File menu at the top and select the Open command. The Open QVT/Term Session window will appear. Type the computer name or IP address in the Host Name or IP Address field. For example, to connect to Bayou, type bayou.uh.edu in the Host Name or IP Address field. After entering the computer name, click on the OK button.

QVT/Term will connect to the remote computer. When connected it will display a login prompt requesting a user name. Enter the user name and press the Enter key. When prompted for a password, enter the password and press the Enter key. If both were properly entered, QVT/Term will present a command prompt where commands can be entered for the remote computer system to execute.

After successfully connecting to a remote computer, QVT/Term will allow you to save the host information. Click on the File menu and select the Save Active Configuration command and give the configuration a name that will make sense to you. This will save the settings with that name in the Configuration section of the Open QVT/Term Session dialog. In future attempts to connect to the same remote computer, the computer name does not need to be typed again.

Exiting QVT/Term

To exit QVT/Term, select Exit from the File menu located at the top left of the application.
