National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Last updated: October 23, 2009
The University of Houston's IT Security team is participating in National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) by offering campus-wide activities that draw attention to this important issue.
The National Cyber Security Alliance, a consortium of government agencies and private industry, sponsors National Cyber Security Awareness Month throughout October.
The theme for this year's program is "Our Shared Responsibility." IT Security personnel and the Texas Department of Information Resources support this activity and are disseminating information about free awareness month activity sponsored by Texas State University at San Marcos on the San Marcos campus October 14.
At the beginning of the fall semester, the UH IT Security team also introduced a system-wide marketing campaign "SECURITY, Safe, Simple, Secure" to promote information security awareness at UH.
The marketing campaign promotes IT Security services and programs, introduces the IT Security team, and discusses how to report security incidents. It also provides students, faculty and staff with computer security, e-mail security, social networking and internet security tips and helpful responses for computing safely while on the university's network.
The IT Security staff developed and distributed an IT Security handbook designed for technology managers and IT Security "Gift of Awareness" security tips packets. Accordion wallet cards with information security awareness suggestions for UH students were given out with the other materials at numerous UH events.
The IT Security team will continue to give presentations and to promote information security awareness on an ongoing basis at the university.
Members of the Web Technologies team at Web and Communication Services in Technology Support Services also worked to promote security awareness with informational postings on the UH web page and on the IT web page.
