    Subject: UH UIT Security Flash Alert: TEKSystems Student Employment Scam

    UH Students:

    There is a scam email being targeted at UH students.  The emails being sent are designed to trick UH students into disclosing personal information used to steal money and potentially engage in other criminal activity.  These emails falsely indicate they are being sent by a legitimate company, TEKSystems – they are not. 

    The subject of the email is “UH Part Time Job Offer” and the content of the message is:

     

    "Dear UH Student,


          We got your contact through your school database and I'm happy to inform you that our reputable company TEKsystems, Inc® is currently running a student empowerment programme. This programme is to help loyal and hardworking students like you secure a part time job which does not deter you from doing any other, you just need a few hours to do this weekly and with an attractive weekly salary. 

    KINDLY EMAIL BACK WITH YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL ADDRESS IF INTERESTED IN THIS JOB POSITION.

    How did they get my UH address?  Has there been a UH data breach?

    The messages are being sent to students’ UH addresses, which are considered directory information and are publicly available.  We have no evidence that there has been any unauthorized access to UH databases. 

     

    Is there a way I can stop my UH information from being made public?

    Students have the ability to restrict access to their directory information.  For more information about FERPA privacy settings, please see the 2016-2017 UH Student Handbook: Student Records: Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act. The Student Handbook is available on the UH Dean of Students website.

     

    What do I do if I have already responded to the message?

    If you have already responded to the message with personal information, please contact UIT Security or the UH Police at 713-743-3333 immediately for assistance.
