MIS Policies Manual
Chapter 2: Documentation
Section 1: Documentation Policies
Documentation provides the means for conveying information within the organization in a clear and understandable manner that reduces the need for intervention and allows for a more efficient completion of duties. In order to be useful, documentation must be complete, accurate, readily available, easily understood, and up-to-date. The amount of documentation depends on the size and complexity of the application or procedure being documented. Types of documentation maintained by MIS or users are:
- Project documentation
- Application documentation
- Program documentation
- Batch processing documentation
- File documentation
- Tables documentation
- Field-level help
- Vendor-supplied documentation
Wherever possible, it is our intention to maintain and make available any and all documentation "on-line." This will usually be in the form of single-line or full screen help within a field, application or menu on the administrative computing system. The availability of documentation in this form provides the most efficient media for both accessing and updating the information. Due to current technology limitations, all forms of documents may not be accessible in this manner. In those cases, other documents will either be in printed form or stored on a server which would be available on the UH campus network.
