Third Year Curriculum
The Junior Design Studio explores multi-dimensional projects and applied problem solving methodologies. Three-dimensional design and rendering software applications are added to the student’s arsenal, while Interface Design explores existing and conceptual design solutions as they relate to today’s increasingly interactive world.
Workshops led by visiting industry professionals offer unique and valuable additions to the studio environment. Another integral aspect of the industrial design education are design internships. Through an internship the student gains valuable "real world" studio experience. Because of the demands of an internship many students choose to pursue it during the summer session.
INDS 3398 Special Design Problem
(EunSook Kwon with Larry Bell, ARCH 5500, Fall 2004)
Junior and seniors may take an elective in conjunction with the SICSA program. INDS 3398 investigates innovative approaches of building a vehicle and its related communication/control devices to be operated on the surface of the Moon and the Mars, with the collaboration of ARCH 5500.
Sasakawa International Center for Space Architecture (SICSA)
University of Houston College of Architecture
INDS 3500: Design Studio V Cr. 5 (2-9)
Prerequisite: INDS 2500 and 2501 and consent of the dean.
Design problem solving based on the human-centered design. Diverse methods of identifying human needs, developing ideas, and evaluating design alternatives are emphasized.
INDS 3350: Human Factors Cr.3. (3-0)
Prerequisite: INDS major or consent of instructor.
Survey of anthropometry, perception and Man-Machine Interface. This course focuses on the use and application of existing human factors to the design case studies.
INDS 3340: Computer Aided Industrial Design Cr. 3 (3-0) or (2-3)
Prerequisite: INDS 2340 and 2341 or consent of instructor.
Advanced level of understanding and creating three-dimensional modeling and rending. Rapid prototyping technology is also introduced to enhance students’ competencies in digital modeling.
INDS 3501: Design Studio VI Cr. 5 (2-9)
Prerequisite: INDS 3500.
Continuation of topics introduced in INDS 3500. Development of creative design thinking and human-centered design. This course integrates diverse design methods and techniques to develop technology-driven products for the near future.
INDS 3351: Design Research Methods Cr.3. (3-0)
Prerequisite: INDS major or consent of instructor.
This course covers diverse theories and methods for conducting design research. Emphasis is given to understand quantitative and qualitative research methods and apply them in the design process.
INDS 3341: Design Interface Cr. 3 (3-0)
Prerequisite: INDS major or consent of instructor.
This course deals with complex information data and its interfaces surrounding us in the Information Age. Emphasis is given to investigating information architecture and interaction design as conceptual tools for designers, and to developing innovative interfaces as visual tools.
1336:
[GOVT 2301]
U.S. and Texas Constitutions and Politics (formerly POLS 2333)
Cr. 3. (3-0).
Credit may not be earned for both POLS 1336 and 1394.
Introduction to the constitutions and politics of the United States and Texas, emphasizing constitutional structure, federalism, separation of powers, limited government, public opinion, elections, and civil liberties.
INDS 4355: Design Internship Cr. 3 (3-0)
Prerequisite: Junior standing and prior written approval of the program director.
Enhancement of design knowledge and techniques learned in the classroom through working experiences at design consultancies or related companies. (Internship credit is limited to three credit hours and requires employer evaluation.)
