Leadership Development

Learning and Talent Development offers a variety of programs and tools for every level of leaders and future leaders.

Exploring Leadership, Series 1 and 2

Exploring Leadership is comprised of two lunchtime series, taken consecutively, each comprised of three workshops designed to give new and future leaders foundational leadership knowledge and techniques.  Topics include:  the new supervisor, communications fundamentals, personal branding and conflict resolution.  This series is offered three times per year.  Register through PASS.

S.T.E.P. 1 - Business Basics for Supervisors

PREREQUISITE:  Attendees must supervise at least one, full-time employee.

STEP 1 is designed for new and developing leaders and offers an overview of the people, places and policies of UH essential to managerial success. The presenters are subject matter experts on each topic.

      1. The Art of Talent Acquisition
      2. Cultural Sensitivity in the Workplace
      3. Managing Performance
      4. Risk Management and Safety in the Workplace
      5. Q&A Panel with all Presenters

The course schedule is distributed three times per year.  Register through PASS.

S.T.E.P. 2 - Leadership Skills for Supervisors

PREREQUISITE:  Attendees must supervise at least one, full-time employee.  Please be aware there is a fee for completion of the Myers Briggs Personality Survey.

STEP 2 is designed for new and developing leaders. (It is independent from the STEP 1 program and may be taken before or after STEP 1.)  Step 2 focuses on leadership and interpersonal skills.

  6. Building and Leading an Effective team

Leading With Excellence for Managers

For managers and above, “Leading with Excellence” takes a deeper dive into leadership skills than “S.T.E.P.”

PREREQUISITE:  Applicants and their supervisors must complete a questionnaire beforehand to determine eligibility.  Please be aware there is a fee for completion of the (expanded) Myers Briggs Personality Survey.

Topics include:

  1. Leadership and Influence
  2. Understanding Leadership Styles
  3. Emotional Intelligence
  4. Managing Conflict
  5. Situational Leadership
  6. Individual Mentoring Session

Leading in the 21st Century for directors and above

The challenges of senior leaders change as often as the world around us, and in these times of constant economic, political and social shifting, the executive's ability to effectively manage their teams – while keeping an eye on future trends -- becomes crucial.

Leading in the 21st Century is a new program currently being developed by UH Learning and Development for UH senior leaders and executives.

Anticipated topics include:

  • Strategic thinking
  • Change management
  • Coaching and mentoring
  • Building partnerships
  • Succession planning
Participants are nominated by their respective division and will engage in a variety of activities, such as group facilitation, case studies, videos, project assignments and more.
