OCTOBER 2007 - EMPLOYEE FOCUS

Mandatory Training

It’s mandatory training season and employees across campus are being notified of their required training available online through UHS Professional Development & Training. All mandatory courses must be completed by December 31, 2007. If the assigned courses are not completed by the deadline, their associated accesses and/or privileges will be revoked.

Monthly course completion reports will be distributed to College/Division Administrators and Division Vice Presidents. But did you know that you can also monitor your own course status through PASS where the information is updated nightly? To learn how, go to

http://www.uh.edu/admin/hr/passhelp/trainingsummary.htm

For assistance, please call the Customer Service Center at 3.3988.

Please continue to nominate your outstanding colleagues, and we will continue to publish them in order of receipt. CLICK HERE TO NOMINATE NOW!

Who:
Amber Meuth, M.Ed.
Program Coordinator 2

Years of UH Service:
1.5 years

Department:
College of Education
Department of Curriculum and Instruction

How to Contact Me:
ammeuth@uh.edu; 713-743-4990

Where to Find Me:
466 Farish Hall

When to Call Me (What you do):
If you or someone you know has a degree in a math or science related field and want to obtain teacher certification and teach in public schools.

Helpful Hint:

Relationships are everything. Build positive relationships with everyone around you.

What I Like Best About My Job:
I like the people I work very much. I also enjoy working in higher education where I can view educational issues from a different perspective.

What Amber’s Colleagues Say:
Denisse Sioss says Amber is “in charge of the Q-TRAC program, which recruits and trains people with degrees in math and science to become teachers. She spends countless hours filling the gap for much-needed qualified teachers in Houston schools.

Who::
Elizabeth Bullock
Academic Advisor 3

Years of UH Service:
9 Years

Department:
Bauer College of Business
Accountancy & Taxation

How to Contact Me:
ebullock@uh.edu or 3.5936

Where to Find Me:
Melcher Hall room 275

When to Call Me:
I am the graduate advisor for the Masters of Science in Accountancy Program. I also manage the Accountancy & Taxation Professional Program.

Helpful Hint:
Because we’re in a profession that does a lot of interacting, giving, and supporting, advisors need to be reenergized. We need to look for those things for ourselves, so that we can keep doing what we need to do. I recommend joining an advising organization such as NACADA and networking with colleagues within the advising community as sources of support. We should also care for ourselves and take time off.

What I Like Best About My Job:
I enjoy being able to assist people with achieving their educational and professional dreams.

What Elizabeth’s Colleagues Say:
Troy Hopkins says “Elizabeth is the advisor for the Masters in Accounting Program which is a fast paced master’s program with very demanding students. She does a great job of helping her students and also coordinates the daily operations of the Professional Accounting Programs office. She is a great asset to the department and the Bauer College of Business and should be recognized.”

Changes to 403(b)(7) Regulations

Effective September 25, 2007 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has made changes to the regulations that govern the administration of 403(b)(7) programs. Employees who are currently contributing to the Optional Retirement Program and/or a Tax Deferred Annuity may be affected.

Newly issued IRS 403(b)(7) account regulations significantly impact the ability of retirement plan custodians to accept transfers and exchanges which are currently permitted under the IRS Ruling 90-24 ("90-24 Transfers"). Transfers, distribution requests, loan requests and new account openings will require the approval of the human resources - benefits department.

It is imperative that you contact your vendor to see how these changes may impact you. Your human resources department is in the process of evaluating how other changes in the regulations may impact our current practices. We will continue to communicate any changes to ensure that we are in compliance with these regulations and to safeguard our program.

These changes do not affect participants in Teacher Retirement System (TRS) or voluntary 457 Deferred Compensation Program.

The wait is finally over! The following link at http://www.uh.edu/dining will take you to the new Catering on Cullen guides provided by UH Dining Services. The Casual Guide provides catering options that are available from such UH favorites as Einstein Bros, and the main Catering Guide provides services for the traditionalist such as continental breakfasts and other mainstays of fine catering.

Please review the new options carefully, as new prices are in effect. We will be in touch soon to share with you the new on-line catering system, Cater Trax that will be available to you within the Fall 2007 Semester.

Little Known Catering Fact:

Did you know that Jackson and Company, Inc., owned by renowned Caterer Jackson Hicks is available to UH as a sub-vendor through the UHS Dining Services contract with ARAMARK, Inc? Amongst Jackson’s noted clients are City of Houston Mayor Bill White, and Former First Lady, Barbara Bush.

For more information, please contact Al Cole, Food Service Director via email at cole-albert@aramark.com or call him at 713.743.4960.

UH Business Services encourages you to explore the many Catering options available through UH Dining Services. Amongst the many conveniences realized from using these services is the added convenience of not having to prepare, negotiate and have additional agreements approved by the Office of Contract Compliance.

Dining Survey

UH Dining Services is conducting a survey to better understand your campus lifestyle and preferences. By sharing your thoughts, they will gain valuable insight to help improve your overall campus dining experience. The online survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete and your responses are confidential.
