Cougars Helping Cougars Hurricane Ike Relief Fund

To help faculty, staff and students who have suffered extensive damages in the recent storm, the University of Houston is establishing the Cougars Helping Cougars Hurricane Ike Relief Fund.

Faculty, staff, students, administrators and alumni are being asked to make tax-deductible charitable donations to assist UH students, employees and their eligible dependents.

A committee is being formed to establish rules and guidelines for the fund and to establish criteria for the disbursement of the donations. Because the need is great, the university will begin collecting donations immediately.

Gifts can be made in the form of checks, money orders, credit cards, or in the case of employees, through payroll deductions.

To submit a gift in person, complete the form here and submit it and payment to the Customer Service Center in 325 McElhinney Hall.

To submit a gift via payroll deduction, log into your PeopleSoft account and follow the instructions available here.

For more ways to give go to Cougars Care.

Merrill Lynch (ORP)/(TDA) Programs Discontinued

The University of Houston recently received confirmation that Merrill Lynch intends to modify their Merrill Lynch Selector Account (RSA) 403(b)(7) products (ORP and/or TDA Programs). Merrill Lynch participants should have received correspondence from Merrill Lynch in the mail at their home address. The following modifications are being made by Merrill Lynch:
  1. Employee loans are being discontinued after close of business December 5, 2008;
  2. Employees will no longer be able to make exchanges, transfers or rollovers into the RSA accounts. Employees may make exchanges, transfers or rollovers out of their 403(b)(7) accounts;
  3. Merrill Lynch will no longer accept contributions into employee accounts after close of business December 5, 2008. Contributions received after this date will be returned to the University of Houston;
  4. The last Quarterly Contribution Statement you will receive for your Merrill Lynch RSA account will be for the period ending December 31, 2008;
  5. Existing balances generally can remain invested at Merrill Lynch; however UH employees will not be able to open new accounts.

What You Need To Do Now:

If you currently have an ORP and/or TDA account with Merrill Lynch, please contact Human Resources at (713) 743-5764 for more information.

You will need to change your current contributions to one of the six (6) ORP and TDA carriers before December 1, 2008, so that you will have no interruption in your retirement plan contributions.

**Merrill Lynch ORP Participants:

If your application for change of carriers for your ORP is not received before December 1, 2008 your contributions will automatically be transferred to a Cash Account at Fidelity Investments in your name.

**Merrill Lynch TDA Participants:

If your application for change of carriers for your TDA is not received before December 1, 2008, your contributions will be cancelled until a form is received from you selecting one of the six eligible carriers.

We apologize for any inconvenience this business decision by Merrill Lynch may cause you. If you have any questions or need any additional information, please contact Human Resources at 713.743.5743.

Federal Disaster Aid

Residents of 29 Texas counties who suffered damage from Hurricane Ike may be eligible for federal disaster assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

The designated Texas counties are: Angelina, Austin, Brazoria, Chambers, Cherokee, Fort Bend, Galveston, Grimes, Hardin, Harris, Houston, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Madison, Matagorda, Montgomery, Nacogdoches, Newton, Orange, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto, Trinity, Tyler, Walker, Waller, and Washington Counties.

"Anyone who was affected by the hurricane could be eligible, but there's no way to know if they don't register," said Federal Coordinating Officer Sandy Coachman of FEMA. "Registration is the first step to receive federal assistance."

Homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and nonprofit organizations can register online anytime at www.fema.gov, or by calling 1.800.621.FEMA (3362), (TTY 1-800-462-7585). These toll-free telephone numbers will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice.

Assistance to individuals could include grants to help pay for uninsured temporary housing needs, essential home repairs and/or other serious disaster-related expenses, such as medical and dental expenses or funeral and burial costs.

Texans should register with FEMA even if they have insurance. FEMA cannot duplicate insurance payments, but under-insured applicants may receive help after their insurance claims have been settled.

Registering with FEMA is required for federal aid, even if the person has registered with another disaster relief organization such as the American Red Cross, local officials or churches. Registrants with FEMA must use the name that appears on their Social Security card. Applicants will be asked to provide:
  • Social Security number
  • Address of the damaged home or apartment
  • Description of the damage
  • Information about insurance coverage
  • A current contact telephone number
  • An address where you can get mail
  • Bank account and routing numbers if they want direct deposit of any financial assistance

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.

Things to Remember When Trying to Understand Disaster Events
  • No one who sees a disaster is untouched by it.
  • It is normal to feel anxious about you and your family's safety.
  • Profound sadness, grief, and anger are normal reactions to an abnormal event.
  • Acknowledging our feelings helps us recover.
  • Focusing on our strengths and abilities will help you to heal.
  • Accepting help from community programs and resources is healthy.
  • We each have different needs and different ways of coping.
  • It is common to want to strike back at people who have caused great pain. However, nothing good is accomplished by hateful language or actions.

Signs that Adults Need Stress Management Assistance

  • Difficulty communicating thoughts
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Difficulty maintaining balance
  • Easily frustrated
  • Increased use of drugs/alcohol
  • Limited attention span
  • Poor work performance
  • Headaches/stomach problems
  • Tunnel vision/muffled hearing
  • Colds or flu-like symptoms
  • Disorientation or confusion
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Reluctance to leave home
  • Depression, sadness
  • Feelings of hopelessness
  • Mood-swings
  • Crying easily
  • Overwhelming guilt and self-doubt
  • Fear of crowds, strangers, or being alone

Ways to Ease the Stress

  • Talk with someone about your feelings- anger, sorrow, and other emotions-- even though it may be difficult.
  • Don't hold yourself responsible for the disastrous event or be frustrated because you feel that you cannot help directly in the rescue work.
  • Take steps to promote your own physical and emotional healing by staying active in your daily life patterns or by adjusting them. This healthy outlook will help yourself and your family. (i.e. healthy eating, rest, exercise, relaxation, meditation.)
  • Maintain a normal household and daily routine, limiting demanding responsibilities of yourself and your family.
  • Spend time with family and friends.
  • Participate in memorials, rituals, and use of symbols as a way to express feelings.
  • Use existing supports groups of family, friends, and church.
  • Establish a family emergency plan. Feeling that there is something that you can do can be very comforting.

When to Seek Help: If self help strategies are not helping or you find that you are using drugs/alcohol in order to cope, you may wish to seek outside or professional assistance with your stress symptoms. Please call UTEAP at 713.500.3327 to speak with a counselor through your Employee Assistance Program.

IRS Changes Deadline for Texans Affected by Ike

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that Texas taxpayers who were adversely affected by Hurricane Ike qualify for IRS tax relief, including the postponement of tax filing and payment deadlines until Jan. 5, 2009.

Texas Society of Certified Public Accountants (TSCPA) has specific information on what the relief postpones and which 29 Texas counties were declared as presidential disaster areas qualifying for individual assistance. Click here for details.

The Texas State Board of Public Accountancy will waive penalties for licensees unable to meet their license renewal deadline due to the hurricane. Learn More.
