Thom Guthrie was born and raised in Houston, TX. He entered the professional world of theatre in 1967, after earning his degree in stage design from the Banff School of Fine Arts in Banff, Canada. Since then, Mr. Guthrie has been part of over 1,000 theatre productions while touring over 45 states; and enjoying every minute of it.

Mr. Guthrie can now be found managing the Moores Opera House, “a real treasure for not only the university, but also the city, state and country.” As manager, he is responsible for all programming, scheduling and technical requirements. He is also the resident lighting designer. With this responsibility, he is charged with creating an interesting visual picture so that the entire performance, not just the music, becomes a piece of artwork.

The opera house itself is an acoustically perfect and amazingly technical facility with an intimate setting that makes it one of the finest opera houses in the country. People travel from all over to see the artwork that it displays on stage as well as throughout the building itself. What makes the university’s opera house so unusual is that it is at once a classroom and a performance hall, and Mr. Guthrie has the pleasure of running one of the largest and finest classrooms around.
