Tenure Track Faculty Satisfaction Survey
The University Commission on Women is pleased to announce the UH Tenure-Track Faculty Job Satisfaction survey results (n=174; RR 54%). The survey project was a co-sponsored initiative between the UCW and Academic Affairs and was administered during fall 2009. The survey was developed by Harvard University's Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education and based on decades of research on predictors of faculty success.
The survey measured UH tenure-track faculty (those hired between 2003-2009) perceptions of factors found to influence retention and overall job satisfaction relating to successful tenure and promotion. The following six factors were measured:
- Clarity and reasonableness of tenure processes and review
- Workload and support for teaching and research
- Integration and balance of work and home responsibilities
- Climate, culture and collegiality on campus
- Compensation and benefits
- Global satisfaction
The UCW and the Faculty Senate are already working on activities and initiatives to address some of the issues revealed in the survey. We hope these findings will provide "talking points" for deans, chairs, and faculty on how to improve tenure-track faculty development during the first several years of employment.
If you are interested in learning more about the survey, please contact Dr. Holly M. Hutchins (firstname.lastname@example.org), UCW Faculty Chair; Associate Professor,
