Dionysia 2012: The Frogs
Work has begun on the 2012 Dionysia production of Aristophanes' Frogs. Translated by Dr. John Harvey and directed by Aaron Landsman (Artist in Residence at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts), Frogs premieres in late April. Stay tuned for more details.
A civil war engulfs the Greek world, debts debilitate the Athenian democracy, and fish hang around the necks of ordinary citizens—endlessly complaining. Bicycles, also, are very expensive. Into this dire landscape walks the god Dionysus and his faithful side-kick Xanthias as they search for an entrance to the underworld so they may call upon the great dead poets of tragedy, have them battle for supremacy, and then bring the conquering bard back to Athens in order to save civilization.
