Frequently Asked Questions

International students with "F" or "J" visa status are required to be covered under the UHS Student Health Insurance Plan or have equivalent health insurance coverage, regardless of the number of credit hours taken. International Student Health Insurance Requirements.

The Student Health Insurance Office does not review or update your status as an international student.

Questions about your international status should be directed to the International Student and Scholar Office.

All International students should review the What Do You Need To Do Guide each term.

  • All international students, regardless of their visa status, are required to read and acknowledge the University of Houston International Student Health Insurance Requirements each term.
  • All International Students must verify that their university account is correct.
  • Each International student with “F” or “J” visa status must ACTIVATE their enrollment or submit a WAIVER each coverage period.
  • Take the time now to review the benefits information.
  • Open Enrollment Activation/Waiver Information and Deadlines.

All international students, regardless of their visa status, are required to read and acknowledge the University of Houston International Student Health Insurance Requirement each semester.

A HOLD is placed on your university account until you complete this acknowledgment. The university identified you as an international student at the time the Health Insurance Notification hold was placed. A change in your international status does not automatically remove the hold. The hold cannot be manually reversed.

You must be enrolled in classes for the term assigned to the current Open Enrollment/Waiver period and have been charged the health insurance fee.

The University must submit an eligible to enroll list to Academic HealthPlans each term. During the ENROLLMENT ACTIVATION and WAIVER period, allow approximately 1-2 business days after the health insurance charge has been posted to your university account for the eligible to enroll list to be processed before attempting to ACTIVATE your enrollment or submit a WAIVER.

The UH Student Health Insurance Office does not interpret or update your status as an international student.

If you have recently updated your status to a non-F or non-J visa holder, your university financial account must be calculated to update the health insurance fee. The university will usually complete this process over the weekend, please check your financial account on Monday to verify that the health insurance fee has reverse.

If the health insurance fee does not reverse, please contact the International Student and Scholar Office verify that all updates to your international status have been completed accurately.

Visa status changes that may affect or reverse a student's waiver or enrollment in the mandatory SHIP must be posted to the student's university account no later than the posted semester deadline.

The university will be informed when your waiver has been approved and will process the credit to your university account.

The information on your waiver submission states: If this Health Insurance Waiver is approved, I will receive a credit, posted on my student account within the next 5 to 7 business days.
