Sickness is expensive in terms of time and money. The University strongly encourages all students to carry health insurance. The student health insurance plan is endorsed by and designed especially for the University of Houston.
The University of Houston Health Center accepts only the University endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan. For services rendered at the University Health Center, you are responsible only for payment of any applicable co-pays and ineligible expenses for services rendered at the Health Center. The University Health Center will bill the insurance company for any eligible expenses. Services obtained outside the Health Center are subject to deductibles and co-insurance requirements for eligible expenses, and all other policy provisions/limitations.
The University of Houston System is changing to a new Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) beginning the upcoming 2016-2017 academic year. AcademicBlue, underwritten by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas, will be the new Student Health Insurance Plan for all UH System components. Academic HealthPlans will be the insurance administrator for this plan.
Undergraduate students attending the University of Houston who are enrolled in 6 or more credit hours (3 for summer session) are eligible to enroll for coverage in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan within the posted open enrollment time period.
Graduate students attending the University of Houston who are enrolled in 3 or more credit hours are eligible to enroll for coverage in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan within the posted open enrollment time period.
Non-Immigrant International students who are enrolled in any amount of credit hours are required by the University of Houston to carry health insurance. At the time of registration, the student will automatically be enrolled in the UH endorsed Student Health Insurance Plan and will be charged for the coverage period on their student financial account. A non-immigrant international student may request a waiver of coverage based on the university’s waiver criteria.
Students enrolled in the Spring/Summer 2016 Student Health Insurance Plan who have graduated (Spring or Summer 2016) are eligible to continue their existing medical coverage.Contact AIG Customer Service at 1-844-337-6873 for more information.
