Citizenship - Ciudadania Community Outreach
The
University of Houston's Hobby Center for Public Policy has joined the
National Association of Latino
Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) as a partner to ensure that the
close to 8 million Legal Permanent Residents (LPR) become US citizens and have a
voice in the American political process.
"ya es hora" is a historic non-partisan civic participation campaign launched as the Latino community’s action-oriented follow-up to the immigrant mobilizations of 2006. It is the largest and most comprehensive effort to incorporate Latinos as full participants in the American political process, bringing together national Latino organizations the NALEO Educational Fund, Mi Familia Vota Education Fund, the National Council of La Raza, over 400 local organizations, and Spanish language media companies Entravision Communications, ImpreMedia and Univision Communications, Inc. ya es hora is a multi-layered integrated campaign which takes a comprehensive approach that links naturalization to voter participation and Census enumeration under a single message: “it’s time.”
As we look to the presidential elections in 2012, it is critical that those eligible to become US citizens are able to have a political voice in the future of the country.
