semester of graduate work. Methods and techniques of research, bibliography,
and scholarly practices.

enrollment. Prerequisite: approval of chair.
6300: Teaching Practicum
Cr. 3. (3-0). Required of all teaching assistants. May
be repeated. Analysis of textbook and instructional materials and preparation
of tests in the first-year undergraduate language program, and the utilization
of these materials in the clasroom.
6301: Proseminar
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing or approval of
chair. Graduate requirement to be taken early in graduate work. Introduction to
literary theory, history of literary criticism, basic bibliographical and
research resources.
6333: The Age of Enlightenment (formerly 6330)
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
graduate standing. The study of major works of literature and criticism written
between 1700 and 1781; that is, from Gottsched to Kant.
6340: German Americans and Texas-Germans
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate
standing or consent of instructor. Study of biographical, religious,
journalistic, and fictional writing by and about German Americans to determine
the cultural and political impact of their immigration to the United States
and, specifically, to Texas.
6343: The Romantic Movement
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing. The
origin and development of German romanticism (1798-1835). Examination of major
literary, critical, and philosophical texts.
6355: Nineteenth Century Prose and Poetry
Cr. 3. 3-0). Prerequisite: graduate
standing. Poetry, the novelle, and the novel of the nineteenth century with
emphasis upon the literature of Junges Deutschland, the Biedermeier era, and
realism.
6366: Twentieth Century Drama
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing.
Analysis and discussion of representative works; emphasis on the
experimentation in form, the variety of dramatic expression, and the impact of
dramatic intent upon form.
6368: Twentieth Century Poetry
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing.
In-depth study of the works of important poets of the twentieth century from
Hofmannsthal to the present.
6381: The Teaching of German Composition and Conversation
Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisite: graduate standing or approval of chair. Designed for secondary
and college-level teachers; techniques of teaching and evaluating German
composition and initiating and stimulating clas discussion on all levels.
6392: Reading German For Non-Majors I
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing or consent of instructor. May not apply toward
foreign language requirement for BA degree. Reading knowledge of German as research tool. Accelerated
study and analysis of grammar and linguistic structures of German scholarly and scientific literature.
6393: Reading German For Non-Majors II
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: GERM 6392. May not apply toward foreign language requirement for BA degree.
Continuation of GERM 6392 with emphasis on translation problems and specialized vocabulary. Readings in specific research areas.
6396: Selected Topics in German Literature
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: 12
semester hours in advanced German literature or approval of chair. May be
repeated with approval of chair.
6397: Selected Topics in German
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing
or approval of chair. May not apply toward any foreign language requirement.
May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
6399-7399: Master's Thesis
Cr. 3 per semester.
7396: Topics in the Age of Goethe
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate
standing. Study of a specific period or movement, such as Storm and Stress and
romanticism, or of specific individuals, such as Goethe and Schiller, or a
specific genre. Examination of major literary, critical, and philosophical
writings. May be repeated when topics vary.
