Scholarships & Financial Support

The UH Graduate College of Social Work offers a number of scholarships to entering and continuing students.

Any non Texas resident receiving a scholarship of $1,000 or more will receive in-state (resident) tuition rates.

Scholarships for Entering Students

Florence Clemenger Presidential Scholarships are awarded to entering students who have not previously attended UH, who show evidence of strong academic ability, as reflected by competitive Grade Point Averages and standardized test scores.

Dean's Advisory Council Scholarships are awarded each semester, and are based on academic scholarship, with preference given to full-time students.

The Henley Academic Scholarship in Social Work is awarded to one or more entering students with excellent academic skills, as evidenced by ranking in the top quartile of GRE scores.

Scholarships and Awards for Continuing (currently enrolled) Students

Dean's Scholarships are special awards made each semester to students based on academic scholarship.

The Charlotte Campbell Scholarship Award is awarded annually to a continuing student in Social Work who has completed at least 28 semester credit hours and has a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

The R.J. DeBottis Scholarship is awarded annually to a continuing student who has demonstrated activism and advocacy for older adults while maintaining a GPA of 3.33 or higher.

The Ruth Goldman Scholarship is awarded annually to a student who demonstrates a commitment to advancing peace and social justice.

The George Magner Scholarship is awarded to students who demonstrate interest in a career in and the enhancement of public social services.

The Gary Nichols Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students who meet these criteria: participation in the American Humanics Program, extensive community involvement, and a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

The Gerson David Scholarship in Gerontology is awarded to one student each year. The recipient must demonstrate a commitment to gerontology as a field of practice and maintain a GPA of 3.25 or higher.

The Mark Magaziner Award is given annually to the student or student team whose research project is ranked highest through a competitive review process in the school.

The Mollie Nadelman Award is offered each semester to a student to help cover the costs of texts.

The Josephine Stewart Scholarship is awarded periodically to a student who demonstrates interest in either research or a career in the field of women's issues.

Child Welfare Education Project (stipend support)

The Child Welfare Education Project (CWEP) is open to all incoming and current GSSW students. Its focus is to prepare master's level social work students for challenging and rewarding work in children's protective services. The CWEP program provides stipends for full- and part-time students as follows:

  • Full-time students receive a stipend of $2,500 per semester for up to five (5) semesters;
  • Part-time students receive a stipend of $1,800 per semester for up to 10 semesters
  • Full-time advanced standing students receive $2,500 per semester for up to three (3) semesters
  • Part-time advanced standing students receive $1,800 per semester for up to five (5) semesters.

Note: Financial support received through CWEP requires re-payment through professional social work employment in Children's Protective Services. For each semester of support, eight (8) months employment at CPS is required. Current CPS employees who attend school part-time pay back four (4) months for each semester in which a stipend was received.

CWEP applicants must (1) be accepted to the M.S.W. Program, (2) be eligible for employment by the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, and (3) undergo a criminal background and driving record check.

AGIFT Fellowship Program

Agencies for Gerontology Intercultural Field Training, AGIFT, funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York City, prepares graduate social work students for competent, culturally sensitive practice in gerontological and geriatric social work.

Fellowships of $2,000 per semester are available during the semesters in which the student is enrolled in designated field practicum courses and placed in designated AGIFT agencies. The number of fellowships available is limited. Students will be selected for fellowships through a competitive application process administered by the Office of Field Practicum.

AGIFT Consortium agencies include:

ARISE-University of Texas Center on Aging
Associated Catholic Charities
Baylor College of Medicine Geriatric Center
Better Business Bureau Silver Sleuths
Harris County Hospital District
Housing Opportunities of Houston
Optimum Personal Care
Sheltering Arms Senior Services
Texas Department of Protective & Regulatory Services/Adult Protective Services
Veteran's Administration Medical Center

UH Financial Aid

A variety of grants and loans are available through the University of Houston Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (Room 26 Ezekiel W. Cullen Building). Review the Graduate and Professional Studies Bulletin and other online information from UH regarding financial aid, or call 713.743.9051.

Graduate Assistant Tuition Fellowship (GATF). In exchange for 20 hour a week employment in the GSSW, students receive $4,000 per semester (Fall and Spring), plus an amount equal to resident tuition for nine credit hours. Non-residents benefit additionally by receiving in-state tuition rates. Students must apply and interview for GATF positions in the GSSW; if awarded a GATF, students must enroll for a minimum of nine hours each Fall and Spring semester. Mandatory fees charged by UH remain the responsibility of the student and are not included in the GATF.

Once applicants have received their acceptance letter for admission to the M.S.W. program, they may apply for a GATF.
