6301: Production and Operations Management
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. This course is a survey
of the application of operations management concepts and techniques to
business problems in both manufacturing and service organizations. Topics
include demand forecasting, aggregate production planning, distribution
and manufacturing inventory management, facility location and layout,
materials management, work force and production scheduling, quality management,
service sector operations, and international operations.
6341: Information Systems
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. A managerial perspective
on the effective use of information systems for strategic advantage and
operational performance in organizations.
6360: Statistical Methods for Business
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. A survey of statistical
methods for obtaining useful information from data. Data description;
probability used in statistical inference; statistical inference in one-,
two-, and multisample situations, including analysis of count data.
6361: Introduction to Management Science
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. An introduction to quantitative
models and methods for business decisions. Deterministic decisions under
constraints, including linear programming and its applications, inventory
control, and project scheduling. Decisions under uncertainty, including
forecasting, simulation, and decision analysis.
6381: Operations Management Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and approval of chair. Survey of the basic concepts, theories, and
techniques for the management of operating systems that involve the design,
operation, and control of systems producing manufactured goods and
services. Topics include forecasting, aggregate planning, materials
planning, project and process control, scheduling, inventory management,
capacity planning, and quality control.
7350: Probability Model and Applications
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. A first course in probability
intended to serve as a foundation for statistics and operations research.
Basic probability theory; independence and dependence; Discrete, continuous,
and multivariate distributions; conditioning as a means for problem-solving.
7351: Forecasting Models Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6360 or approval of chair. Applied treatment of modern forecasting methodologies, including regression analysis of time series, smoothing procedures, econometric models, and autoregressive integrated moving
average (ARIMA) models.
7352: Nonparametric Statistics Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate
standing and DISC 6360 or approval of chair. Use of distribution-free
statistics for estimation and hypothesis testing with application in
business and management decisions; statistical methods based on empirical
distribution functions; order statistics; rank sums.
7353: Design and Analysis of Experiments Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6360 or approval of chair. Principles of design and analysis of experiments, including randomized blocks, Latin squares, split plots, factorial experiments, and confounded designs; analysis of covariance; multiple comparisons and orthogonal contrasts.
7354: Sampling Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6360 or approval of chair. Planning and analyzing samples from finite
populations; simple, stratified, multistage, and systematic sampling; ratio
estimates.
7355: Decision Analysis for Uncertainty Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6361 or DISC 7370, or approval of chair.
Decision trees and risk neutrality, expected utility theory, types of risk
attitudes and utility functions. Applications to business decision making
and to public policy evaluation.
7357: Decision Analysis for Tradeoffs Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6361 or DISC 7370 or approval of chair. Multiattribute tradeoff models, intertemporal tradeoff models, and cost-benefit models. Additive value theory with applications to business decision making and to public policy evaluation.
7358: Statistical Methods in Research Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6360 or consent of instructor. A survey of statistical methods in research emphasizing applications and use of computer packages. Multiple regression; analysis of variance and covariance; principal
components; Discriminant analysis and factor analysis.
7361: Operations Management in the Service Sector Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6301. Problems and real-world
applications of operations management in service oriented industries, such
as hospitals, banks, utilities, insurance, and other public systems.
7362: Logistics Management and Systems Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and approval of chair. Logistics, its economic base, and
components.
7363: Manufacturing Control Systems Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6301. A critical examination of current management
methods and practices in the control of manufacturing operations.
7364: Introduction to Total Quality Management Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6360. Planning and organizing for quality, the principles of continuous quality improvement, control charts, acceptance sampling, and reliability testing.
7365: Advanced Manufacturing and Distribution Systems Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6301. An examination of emerging
technology in computer-assisted manufacturing, including automation,
robotics, computer-aided design, and integrated scheduling systems.
7366: Distribution Problems and Logistics Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and approval of chair. Relation of distribution to elements of the production-cycle; definitions; problems and cases.
7367: Product Design Planning and Development Methodology Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and approval of chair. Study of the
structure of the decision sequence in the design, planning, and development
of a product.
7368: Materials Management
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC
6301 or approval of chair. Theory, techniques, and applications in
the definition and solution to problems in materials management.
7369: Cases in Operations Management Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6301 or approval of chair. Practical applications and limitations of analytical techniques in operations management, methods of
improving the level of acceptance by management.
7370: Introduction to Operations Research
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. Introduction to deterministic
models in operations research. Linear, nonlinear, and dynamic programming;
network analysis, Kuhn-Tucker conditions, and optimum-seeking methods.
Emphasis will be placed on modeling and applications.
7371: Mathematical Programming Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate
standing and DISC 7370 or approval of chair. Linear programming; duality
and complementary slackness; decomposition and upper-bounding methods;
nonlinear programming; integer programming and combinatorial optimization;
solution of large-scale problems by computer software.
7373: Business Applications of Data Base Management Systems I Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6341. Concepts and methods
associated with definition, creation, and management of data bases for
business applications.
7374: Business Applications of Data Base Management Systems II Cr. 3.
(3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 7373. Advanced study of
the use of the semantic, entity-relationship, and relational data base
systems for business applications.
7375: Transaction Processing Systems Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate
standing. Detailed coverage of the design and operation of information systems with special emphasis on IT auditing, security and controls.
7376: Systems Analysis and Design Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6341. Study of various design methodologies used to
develop the information requirements and design specifications for
large-scale computer-based systems.
7377: Project Operations Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6301. An in-depth analysis of methodologies for project scheduling and management.
7378: Information Technology Management and Controls Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing. Provides a managerial view of enterprise-wide information systems with emphasis on managerial aspects of IT auditing, governance and controls.
7379: Management Information Systems Management Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisites: graduate standing and at least two of the courses DISC 6341,
DISC 7373, DISC 7375, and DISC 7376. The capstone course for students with
an emphasis in MIS. Topics include MIS organization, MIS planning and
control managing systems development, and managing changing technology.
7381: Simulation Processes Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing, DISC 6361, or DISC 7350 and DISC 7370. Random number generation; design, construction, and verification of computer simulation models.
7383: Advanced Quality Control Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate
standing and DISC 7364. Advanced study of quality control including
economic issues in sampling and inspection, instrument calibration and
reliability, Chi Square charts, experimental design, control surfaces and
multiple regression analysis of process data.
7384: Operations Management Internship Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 6301. A practicum in operations management.

statistical estimation and hypothesis testing. Distributions of functions
of random variables, order statistics, sufficient statistics, and decision
models forming the basis of statistical applications in business.

hypothesis testing. Statistical decision models and sequential decisions
and their role in management and economics.
8364: Linear Models Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 7358. A general treatment of the theory of
linear estimation in models with linearly structured means and variances.
Distributions of quadratic forms; generalized inverses; projections; fixed
and mixed models; variance components.
8366: Multivariate Statistical Methods Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 7358 or approval of chair. Multivariate
statistical methods are developed for multivariate normal populations.
Multivariate normal distribution; T2 statistic; Wishart distribution;
multivariate general linear model; Discriminant analysis; canonical
correlation; principal components; factor analysis.
8368: Time Series Analysis Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 8362 and DISC 8370. Advanced treatment of modern techniques for analyzing univariate and multivariate time series, including autocorrelation and spectral density functions, autoregressive integrated
moving average (ARIMA) models, and transfer functions.
8370: Introduction to Stochastic Processes Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 7350. The theory and application of stochastic processes as models for empirical phenomena, with special emphasis on the Poisson, Markov, and renewal processes. Applications of stochastic
processes in equipment replacement, inventory, queuing, and other related
areas in business and management.
8372: Nonlinear Programming Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 7371 or approval of chair. Development of the theory and methods of nonlinear programming; Kuhn-Tucker and nonlinear duality theory. Special classes of problems including quadratic, convex, and geometric programming.
8373: Dynamic Programming Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing, DISC 7371, and DISC 8370 or approval of chair. Sequential decisions under uncertainty with emphasis on Discrete-time Markov decision processes.
Finite-stage models; Discount and average optimality criteria for infinite-stage models; methods of successive approximation; policy
improvement and linear programming for solving sequential decision problems
in business and management.
8374: Queuing Theory and Applications Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing, DISC 8370 or approval of chair. The basic theory and properties of Markov chains and queues. Single and multiple server queues under
various arrival and service conditions. Applications in cash management,
marketing, drive-in service, inventory control, air traffic control, and
other waiting line situations.
8375: Integer Programming Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate standing and DISC 7371. The theory, methodology, and applications of integer
programming. Topics include cutting planes and branch-and-bound algorithms,
Benders' method, group-theoretic approach, and Lagrangian relaxation;
specially structured problems, such as the knapsack, set covering and
partitioning, fixed-charge, and location problems.
