LL.M. Requirements

Degree candidates must complete a minimum of 24 semester hours in approved courses, of which at least 18 hours must be in residence at the Law Center. U.S. students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.50 or better. Foreign students must maintain a 2.00 cumulative grade point average. In addition, U.S. candidates must complete a thesis of publishable quality to be reviewed and approved by a committee of faculty members. Foreign LL.M. candidates must complete a 40 page seminar paper.

The program is offered on both a full- and a part-time basis. Students must maintain continuous enrollment of at least three (3) semester hours every Fall and Spring semester until graduation, and all course requirements for the degree must be completed within three calendar years from the semester of admission. The program can be completed within one calendar year by full-time students.

No single degree plan is required for completion of the LL.M. degree in any of the six areas. Instead, LL.M. degree candidates arrange individualized degree plans in consultation with and subject to the approval of their academic advisor. No LL.M. credit is given for courses previously taken as a J.D. student. A substantial portion of the program designed for U.S. attorneys will be within the selected area of specialization. Degree plans for attorneys from foreign countries will be tailored to reflect the candidate's background and reasons for undertaking graduate study in the United States.
