Admission to Master's and Doctoral Programs

In addition to the College of Natural Science and Mathematics Admission Requirements, the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences requires that applicants submit verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing GRE scores. Conditional admission may be granted to applicants with less than 3.00 on the last 60 hours if there is an indication that graduate work can be successfully completed. A faculty committee will evaluate the applications of all Ph.D. applicants. They will examine a broad range of criteria, which will normally include the content of undergraduate and graduate programs and grades earned, particularly in the areas of geosciences, physics, chemistry, biology, and mathematics; scores earned on the general GRE tests; three letters of recommendation from individuals who are able to judge the candidate's likelihood for success in graduate school and his or her potential for scholarly scientific research; and scientific, professional, and technical publications and master's thesis.
