6300: Seminar in Sociological Theory
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SOC 3300 or equivalent. Required of all M.A. candidates. Focus is upon theory construction and the analysis of central concepts of sociology, their historical development, and current application from a diversity of sociological paradigms.

6302: Proseminar in Contemporary Sociological Issues
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in sociology or consent of instructor. Required of all M.A. candidates. Focusing on current issues and controversies in the social sciences in both theoretical and applied areas.

6304: Social Statistics
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: sociology graduate status or consent of instructor. Required of all M.A. candidates. Statistical procedures in social sciences; descriptive and inferential statistics. Introduction to multiple regression.

6306: Seminar in Quantitative Methods
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: consent of instructor or SOC 6304 or its equivalent. Required of all M.A. candidates. Methods of gathering sociological data, with emphasis on sample surveys: operationalization of theoretical variables (reliability and validity), research design, measurement; evaluation and policy research.

6308:6309: The Professional Sociologist
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor and graduate status in sociology; may not be applied toward degree in sociology. Course provides training in the several roles of professional practice: teaching, research, and community service.

6310: Seminar in Applied Sociology
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: SOC 6305 and SOC 6306 or consent of instructor. Issues of agency specific designs, quasi-experiments in organizational settings, and evaluation research as well as matters of researchers' responsibility involving evaluation. Special emphasis given to medical, educational, corporate, and public settings.

6311: Qualitative Sociological Methods
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in sociology or consent of instructor. (Required of all M.A. candidates.) Experience in participant-observation, interviewing, urban ethnography, and other field-research skills, with emphasis on computer applications.

6312: Seminar in the Sociology of Work and Occupations
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in sociology or consent of instructor. Labor force trends, analysis of occupational structure and occupational groups, occupational socialization, careers, subjective responses to work, work and family.

6321: Seminar in the Sociology of Culture.
Cr. 3 (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in sociology or consent of instructor. Analysis of culture as the source of social meanings; the relationship between culture and key social institutions, including the family, the economy, and medicine.

6325: Seminar in Race and Ethnic Relations
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status. An examination of the social and cultural processes that produce, reinforce, or alter racial and ethnic categories and systems of stratification.

6330: Seminar in Social Psychology
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status. Emphasis on the imposition of social structure upon the individual and the group. Diverse theoretical orientations are adopted and applied to research data.

6341: Seminar in Formal Organizations
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in sociology or consent of instructor. Focuses on concepts and methods in the study of formal organizations including authority structures, communication systems, worker commitment, interorganizational linkages, impact of technology, and multiorganizational settings in the delivery of services.

6350: Sociology of the Body
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Graduate standing or approval of the graduate advisor. Examination of key theoretical perspectives, including social constructivist interpretations, on the social body; assessment of the empirical literature, including research on body work, embodied resistance, and medicalization.

6351: Seminar in Social Stratification and Mobility
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status. In-depth analysis of stratification theories and issues. Topics include characteristics of social classes; social mobility, policies, and class; and classes in comparative perspective.

6352: Seminar in Population
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status. Analysis of basic processes affecting population characteristics. Topics include fertility, migration, mobility, and population characteristics of developed and underdeveloped countries.

6357: Seminar in Urban Sociology
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor and graduate or postbaccalaureate status. The study of urbanism and urbanization, including modern metropolitan problems, and structural, ecological, and social psychological theories of the urban phenomenon.

6360: Sociology of Urban Education
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing. Issues confronting urban public schools, including desegregation, student achievement, teacher morale, and drop-out and turnover behaviors.

6363: Seminar in Sociology of Deviance
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing or approval of graduate advisor. Review and critique of current theoretical explanations and significant empirical research on deviance.

6371: Seminar in the Family
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status. Current theory and research in marriage and family; cross-cultural perspective on family variation and change; contemporary issues in marriage and family relations.

6375: Seminar in Sociology of Law
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status.  Examination of social factors affecting the law, legal institutions, and legal actors.  Applies socioloegal theories toward understanding how the law is created, legal functions, and how individuals understand the law.

6380: Seminar in Medical Sociology
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in sociology, psychology, anthropology, or social work, or consent of instructor. Social factors in the etiology, development, and response to illness and disease; emphasis on health and illness behavior and the nature of health care providers.

6385: Seminar in Religion
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate status in Sociology or consent of instructor. Theory and research on the role of religion in contemporary societies, with emphasis on U.S. society.

6390: Seminar in Sociology of Gender
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate status in sociology and approval of graduate advisor. Examination of the social and cultural structures and processes that create, maintain and change gender stratification systems.

6391: Seminar in Sexuality and Society
Cr. 3. (3-0). Approval of graduate advisor, graduate or postbaccalaureate status.  Examination of social factors affecting human sexuality, including behaviors, identities, desires, and related inequalities.

6397: Selected Topics in Sociology
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: graduate status in sociology or the approval of graduate advisor. Topics to be announced each semester. May be repeated for credit as topics change.

7395:7396: Internship in Sociology
Cr. 3 per semester. (3-0). Prerequisites: approval of graduate advisor, graduate standing in sociology: 12 graduate hours (including SOC 6300 and SOC 6305). Combines formal sociological training, theoretical and empirical, with action-oriented programs and agencies in the community; requires practical and research experience in a field placement.
