6395: Practicum for First-Year Teachers

This course offers first-year teachers an opportunity to participate, over a two-semester period, in a total of 45 hours of workshops/seminars designed to support them in a) applying their education knowledge to the full responsibilities of day-to-day teaching, b) reflecting on challenges and events in their classrooms/schools, and c) engaging in cooperative problem solving of the inevitable problems that arise in the beginning teacher experience.

6397: Practicum for First-Year Teachers

Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6360. Review of recent research and theory illuminating the nature, purposes, and meaning of play as a critical early childhood teaching strategy.

7302: Community Education
Cr. 3. (3-0).  Prerequisites: none.  Community education offers community and place-based education experiences linked to curriculum and instruction.  Problem and project-based activities and service learning are also integrated.

7305: Design, Development & Evaluation of Presentations
Cr.3.(0-3). Prerequisite: none. Provides a conceptual framework for understanding presentation design as well as opportunities for hands-on experiences in designing, developing, and evaluating educational presentations using a variety of strategies and tools.

7307: Managing Computer and Information Centers

Exploration of such issues as hardware and software decision-making, local and wide area network operation, software support, vendor relations, electronic security, facility design, and staff development and user training.

7308: Educational Uses of Computer-Mediated Communication
Cr.3.(0-3). Prerequisite: CUIN 6320 or permission of instructor. Introduction to research and application of computer mediated communication (CMC). Examination of asynchronous and synchronous forms of CMC, the process of building online communities, and computer mediated discourse analysis.

Cr.3. (0-3). Prerequisite: Basic computer literacy. Introduction to design of online educational resources with emphasis on learning HTML, including publishing websites, with multimedia content, cross-browser/platform coding, user interface design, and usability/accessibility.

7317: The Visual Representation of Information
Cr.3.(0-3). Explores the design and development of computer-generated instructional graphics. Students will explore and evaluate the design and creation of graphical, iconic, and metaphoric information in interactive visual learning environments.

7318: Current Issues in Instructional Technology I

First semester of a two-semester sequence covering major issues in IT with an emphasis on the professional practice implications of current research and theory. Explores current issues in a seminar format. Each student begins a project relevant to career goals that brings current theory and research to bear on a significant problem.

Second semester of a two-semester sequence that covers major issues in IT with an emphasis on the professional practice implications of current research and theory. Explores current issues in a seminar format. Each student completes a project relevant to career goals that brings current theory and research to bear on a significant problem.

7320: Design and Development of Educational Print Media
Cr. 3.(3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6320 or permission of instructor. Overview of desktop publishing for educators, with both a conceptual framework fo, and hands-on experience with, the design and development of educational print media.

7321: Advanced Telecomputing Applications in Education
Cr.3.(3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 7308. Students who already possess basic telecomputing skills will explore the latest methods of Internet connectivity, investigate new programming options for creating on-line coursework, develop training strategies for novice computer users, and discuss ways that schools and businesses can provide support for their network users.

7322: Curriculum Development in Science Education
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6360. Analysis of contemporary science curricula research. Development and use of criteria for evaluating science curricula currently in use in the area of the student's specialization.

7323: Socio-Cultural Aspects of Informational Technology
Cr.3.(3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6320 or permission of instructor. Introduction to social and cultural issues related to instructional design and uses of technology, including theoretical frameworks of constructivism, critical theory, and postmodernism.

7324: Foundations of Instructional Design
Cr.3.(3-0).Prerequisite: CUIN 6320. Explores the implications of major philosophical and curriculum theory traditions including logical and empirical positivism, postmodernism, critical theory, cognitive and social constructivism, and natural language philosophy. Emphasis on the impact of these traditions on areas such as design and development, training, support, and research.

7325: Materials for Reading and Language Arts Instruction
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ELED 6320 or 6305. Survey and evaluation of current instructional materials, and development of new materials for teaching reading and language arts.

7327: Collaborative Design of Multimedia Materials
Cr. 3. (3-0). Focuses on the design of educational multimedia materials. An applications and research-based experience for students who have completed introductory level instructional technology courses. Main objective is to enable students to experience working as part of a multimedia team to design an instructional package for a client.

7328: Technology in Teacher Education

Effective tehcnology integration in the development of novice and practicing teachers, including strategies for mentoring adult learners, cultivating university-school collaborations, evaluating technology tools, exploring scholarly literature, and leading educational change.

Cr.3. (3-0). Development of strategies for integration of technology into the major content areas, with specific emphasis on planning, teaching, and assessment, as well as evaluation of educational technology resources.

7330: Project-Based Digital Media for Education
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisites: Basic computer literacy. Explores use of technology tools and resources, as well as theoretical principles of information design to create large-scale, instructional digital media projects for delivery online.

7356: Issues in Distance Education
Cr. 3. (3-0). Examines the concepts, technologies and issues related to the development and delivery of distance education. Topics include theory and history, distance education programs throughout the world, components of a distance education system, course design and development, technology and media, instruction and interaction, the student and teacher, and administration and policy-making in distance education.

7357: Collaborative Development of Multimedia Materials
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 7327. Focuses on the development of educational multimedia materials.An applications and research-based experience for students who have completed CUIN 7327. 7363: Sociocultural and Psychological Bases of Reading Instruction

Examines instructional implications of sociocultural, psychological, orthographic, and language factors underlying the development of reading ability in preschoolers through young adults.
