Admission Requirements: Ph.D.

A faculty committee within the department of interest will evaluate applicants to the Ph.D. program on several factors, including academic achievement as evidenced by transcripts from each college or university the applicant has attended, standardized test scores, career objectives, research interests, and the department's ability to match the student's aims and the available faculty.

Admission is a two-part process, meeting the technical requirements of the university and meeting the standards of the specific program a prospective student wants to enter. Enrollment in each program is limited, and meeting the university's admission requirements is thus not sufficient. Consequently, students are strongly advised to query, preferably by e-mail correspondence, the Ph.D. Coordinator for the program of interest. If that program has filled its quota or if the student is unlikely to be among those selected, the cost and effort of a formal application can be saved or deferred until the following year.

Only after contacting the Ph.D. coordinator for the program of interest to you should you consider applying for admission.

If a student does decide to apply after corresponding with the appropriate Ph.D. program coordinator, two sets of material must be sent for consideration. One will be evaluated by professionals from the UH Office of Admissions staff. The other is for consideration by faculty members in the program that a prospective student seeks to enter.

To comply with University of Houston admission requirements, applicants are required to submit the following by February 1:

  1. A completed graduate application form. International students, or those who completed coursework outside the U.S., should use the international application form and complete the Statement of Understanding and Letter of Financial Backing.

  2. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work completed, sent directly from the institutions providing them.

  3. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and/or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. They must be sent directly from the Educational Testing Service. The test code for doctoral applicants to the Bauer College is XT1-26-69.

  4. International applicants must also submit a score of at least 620 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), as well as a Letter of Financial Backing and a Statement of Understanding. The latter two forms are available from the International Section of the Office of Admissions. International applicants who speak English as their native language, have a U.S. high school diploma or have completed a prior college degree in the U.S. are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. TOEFL scores may not be more than two years old at the time of application.

  5. The application fee of $45. For international applicants, there is an additional $75 evaluation fee required by the Office of International Admissions. Payment must be made via personal U.S. check or U.S. money order payable to the University of Houston and included with the application form. No cash is accepted. Only applicants whose fees and international evaluation fees have been paid will have their applications reviewed.

  6. Applications after February 1st incur a $25 late fee.

To permit review by the faculty, applicants are required to submit a second set of documents by February 1 to the Bauer College Ph.D. Application Coordinator for the Ph.D. program of interest at the following address:

Bauer College Ph.D. Application Coordinator
334 Melcher Hall
Houston, TX 77204-6021

  1. A copy of your completed standard graduate application form. If you are an international student or if you will be sending international transcripts, use the international application form and statement of financial understanding instead of the standard graduate admission form.

  2. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work completed; for the program coordinator, a student copy of each is all that is required.

  3. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and/or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores. GRE scores are preferred for applicants in Finance. As above, a copy is satisfactory. The test code for doctoral applicants to the Bauer College is XT1-26-69.

  4. A curriculum vita or resume and a picture

  5. Three letters of recommendation, directly from the sender, and we are far more interested in letters from faculty members than from personal or professional sources.

  6. A statement of purpose: Why do you want to pursue this particular degree at the Bauer College of Business?

Only after contacting the Ph.D. coordinator for the program of interest to you should you consider applying for admission. Please also note that applicants must comply with all college and university applications requirements, including application deadlines. Conditional admission to the Ph.D. program is not possible, nor is part-time enrollment. Only through exclusive commitment and interaction with faculty members and other graduate students can the individual benefit from the Ph.D. program experience. These are programs solely to educate prospective university faculty members.

Admission requirements and information can be found on the Doctoral Programs webpage.
