College of Pharmacy
Organizations for Professional Students
The College of Pharmacy offers opportunities for participation in activities outside the formal classroom. The faculty encourages participation in student professional organizations, but reserves the right to advise students upon the extent of participation when it becomes apparent that their scholastic performance is deficient. The college recognizes the following professional organizations:
Pharmacy Council
This organization is composed of an elected
representative and alternate representative from all of the pharmacy
student organizations and from each of the professional-year classes.
The council coordinates all pharmacy student organizational
activities and acts as a liaison with the administration and faculty
of the college.
Academy of Students of Pharmacy (APhA-ASP)
APhA-ASP is affiliated with the American Pharmacy Association, the Texas Pharmacy Association, and the Houston Area Pharmacy Association.
The organization's mission is to be the collective voice of student pharmacists and prepare student pharmacists to be professionals who provide
and promote pharmaceutical care. The chapter's projects include education and providing patient care in areas of diabetes, heartburn awareness,
and immunizations. Additionally the chapter sponsors the college's annual patient counseling competition of which UH students have placed in the nation's Top
Ten students twice in the last five years.
Christian Pharmacist Fellowship International (CPFI)
CPFI is a worldwide interdenominational ministry of individuals working in all
areas of pharmaceutical service and practice. The mission of CPFI is to help the pharmacy professional grow spiritually and to promote fellowship among pharmacists.
Class Organizations
Each class forms an organization to provide service to its members and to the college. Activities and dues are determined by the class.
Fraternities
Students who are interested in the fellowship and the professional spirit offered by fraternity life will find three national professional fraternities active in both social and professional affairs. Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Psi, and Phi Delta Chi are dedicated to service, to the profession of pharmacy, and to the community.
Mexican-American Pharmacy Students Association (MAPSA)
The purpose of MAPSA is to promote unity among pharmacy students with common interest, values, and backgrounds. Members
participate in a variety of activities including peer tutoring and counseling, fundraising for MAPSA projects,
and educational programs regarding contemporary issues affecting the practice of pharmacy and healthcare
systems. MAPSA serves to promote the academic excellence and public relations of the College of Pharmacy.
RXAggies
The purpose of RXAggies is to promote the pharmacy profession and provide networking opportunities for the former
Texas A&M students as well as other student members of the College of Pharmacy.
Society of Industrial Pharmacy Students (SIPS)
SIPS is an organization designed specifically for those students interested in
pursuing careers in the pharmaceutical industry. The mission is to provide a growth environment for pharmacy students to explore opportunities, prepare for challenges, and be groomed for successful careers in the pharmaceutical industry.
Student National Community Pharmacist Association (NCPA):
NCPA is a national organization that represents the interests of independent and private-practice
pharmacists. This representation includes all the specialties within pharmacy, such as home health,
veterinary, diseasestate management, and many others. Membership includes a monthly journal, quarterly
student newsletters, and free registration to the national convention.
Student National Pharmaceutical Association (SNPhA)
SNPhA was founded in 1972 as a student affiliate of the National Pharmaceutical
Association (NPhA). SNPhA is an educational and service association of students who are concerned about pharmacy issues, professional development, and minority representation in pharmacy and other health-related profession. The chapter is involved in many projects serving the community.
Student Society of Health-System Pharmacists (SSHP)
Affiliated with the Gulf Coast Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the
Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists, the society hosts monthly
meetings featuring speakers on topics pertinent to the practice of
hospital pharmacy and the allied health professions. Annual dues
entitle students to membership in the American Society of
Health-System Pharmacists. This organization is involved in Poison
Prevention Week.
Vietnamese-American Pharmacy Student Society (VAPSS)
The mission of VAPAT-VAPSS is to encourage all Vietnamese-American pharmacy students to participate and become well-informed in all aspects of the pharmacy profession. It
is also the goal of the chapter to encourage the development of all pharmacy students into knowledgeable, competent healthcare professionals, by providing leadership and
participatory opportunities that encourage new ideas and uphold professionalism in pharmacy practice.
Honorary Fraternities
Phi Lambda Sigma (PLS)
A national honor pharmacy society that encourages, recognizes, and promotes leadership in pharmacy. Students who demonstrate dedicated service and leadership and are of high moral and ethical character may be invited to join after the third semester of the professional curriculum. PLS sponsors the McCarty Leadership Lecture Series and a workshop for all the leaders of all pharmacy student organizations.
Rho Chi
The Rho Chi Society is a national pharmacy honor society. Organized in 1958, the Beta Omicron chapter is one of 75 chapters at colleges of pharmacy across the county. Students with high scholastic averages may be invited to join after their fourth semester of the professional curriculum. Rho Chi sponsors the Teaching Excellence Award within the college.
