Department of Sociology
Master of Arts Program
The department offers a Master of Arts degree focusing on the application
of sociological knowledge to the analysis of significant issues confronting
industry, medicine, education, government, and other social institutions.
Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Arts in Sociology program:
Requirements include a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution,
a 3.00 (A=4.00) grade point average on the most recent 60 semester hours of
undergraduate or graduate courses, and Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
scores. (Verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing GRE scores are examined
separately and evaluated as one information source in the total
application.) Applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation.
Plan I Program Requirements (Thesis Option)
Requirements Hours SOC 6300, SOC 6304, SOC 6306 and SOC 6311. (Each course must be completed with a grade of B or better.) 12 Six graduate seminars (Two approved seminars may be taken outside of the department.) 18 SOC 6399:7399: Thesis 6 Total 36
Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above and successfully defend the thesis.
Plan II Program Requirements (Non-thesis Option)
Requirements Hours SOC 6300, SOC 6304, SOC 6306, and SOC 6311 (Each course must be completed with a grade of B or better.) 12 Six graduate seminars (Two approved seminars may be taken outside of the department.) 18 SOC 7395:7396: Internship 6 Total 36
The internship project must be approved by committee, and students must
maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above.
