Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing
Degree Requirements
- Students must complete a minimum of 36 hours of approved graduate course work. Graduate hours must be distributed as outlined below:
- Fifteen to 18 hours in creative writing, of which three hours must be either ENGL 6320 (for poetry students) or ENGL 6321 (for fiction students). No creative writing workshop taken elsewhere may transfer for this requirement. One crossover course is required: fiction students must take three hours in a poetry workshop; poetry students must take three hours in a fiction workshop. A graduate-level nonfiction workshop and a graduate-level playwriting workshop taken through the School of Theatre also qualify as
crossover courses for either genre.
- Nine hours in graduate English or American Literature, literature in translation, or other literary studies.
- Six hours in Modern Thought or other English and Clas graduate courses on appropriate topics on modern thought as designated by the Graduate Committee.
- Three to six hours of graduate courses in Clas or other college.
- Six hours of thesis during which an extended creative writing project will be successfully completed.
