Master of Arts Program

The department offers programs of study leading to the Master of Arts degree in Economics or a Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics. The Master of Arts in Economics degree is offered under the 36-hour, non-thesis Plan II option. The Master of Arts in Applied Economics is offered under two 30-hour plans; a thesis option and a non-thesis option with internship.

Master of Arts in Economics Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Arts in Economics program:

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in economics or an undergraduate degree that includes successful completion of the following courses: intermediate microeconomic theory, intermediate macroeconomic theory, and mathematics (through calculus and matrix algebra). Deficiencies in any of these areas must be remedied at the beginning of the program by taking the needed courses from the following: ECON 3332, ECON 3334, or equivalents; MATH 1431, MATH 1432, MATH 2433, and MATH 2331; or MATH 1431 and ECON 4360.

A 3.00 grade point average (A=4.00) in the most recent 60 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate work is required. Applicants must present Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores and must submit three letters of recommendation. (Verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing GRE scores are examined separately and evaluated as one information source in the total application.)

Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above and satisfactorily complete a comprehensive examination.

Master of Arts in Applied Economics Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Arts in Applied Economics program.

Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution, at least a 3.00 grade point average (A=4.00) in the most recent 60 semester hours of undergraduate or graduate courses. Applicants must present Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores and must submit three letters of recommendation. (Verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing GRE scores are examined separately and evaluated as one information source in the total application). Pre-requisite coursework includes ECON 3332, ECON 3334, ECON 4365 and MATH 1431 or MATH 1314.

The M.A. in Applied Economics is designed to be completed within one calendar year. The program begins in the fall semester. Coursework continues through the subsequent spring semester and is completed with thesis or internship hours in the following summer. Applied Economics students are generally admitted only in the fall semester.

M.A. Applied Economics Program Requirements

There are 2 plans under which graduate students can earn a Master of Arts in Applied Economics: M.A. Plan I: 24 hours of coursework and 6 hours of Master's thesis hours; M.A. Plan II: 24 hours of coursework and 6 hours of approved internship; M.A. Applied Economics Program Requirements
