College of Liberal Arts and Social SciencesMaster of Arts in Communication Sciences and DisordersProgram RequirementsThe Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech, Language, Hearing Association (ASHA) accredits the Communication Sciences and Disorders program. A master's degree is required for certification by ASHA and by the state of Texas for professional licensure. The master's degree and ASHA certification are now considered the minimal credentials in the area of communication disorders. For more information, visit www.class.uh.edu/comd Admission Requirements In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements, applicants to the program must have completed required background courses in normal human communication processes at the undergraduate or postbaccalaureate level with a grade point average of at least 3.00 (A=4.00). Less tangible factors also contribute to admission decisions. These may include the potential 1) for communicating effectively and interacting constructively in a clinical and/or supervisory relationship and 2) for contributing to the profession of speech-language pathology. Before acceptance into any course with practicum activities, all students must pass during the first semester in residence a speech, voice, and language proficiency assessment. Students removed from graduate standing are not eligible to register for practicum courses. Plan I: Thesis Option Students must complete 27 hours in content courses in the major, and 15 credits of practicum hours. An additional 6 hours will consist of thesis credit for a minimum total of 48 credit hours. An oral defense of the thesis is required. Plan II: Non-thesis Option Students must complete a minimum of 27 hours in content courses in the major, 6 credits of electives, and 15 credits of practicum hours for a minimum total of 48 credits. The electives can be approved electives taken in Communication Sciences and Disorders or selected from pre-approved courses outside the department. A comprehensive examination is required. The required courses in the major are: COMD 6321, COMD 6326, COMD 6328, COMD 6334, COMD 6361, COMD 6372, COMD 6387, COMD 7321, and COMD 7322.
