College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences
Master of Fine Arts in Art
Admission Requirements
In addition to meeting the college's graduate admission requirements, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Fine Arts program:
- A minimum of 66 semester hours in art at the undergraduate or
postbaccalaureate level with a 3.00 (A=4.00) grade point average,
including 24 semester hours in a major studio discipline, 12 semester
hours in art history, and 30 semester hours in related arts courses.
- A completed graduate application form
- Nonrefundable School of Art application fee of $25.00 (check or money order made out to the University of Houston)
- Two transcripts from each school attended must be sent by those schools directly to the address below
- GRE scores sent to the University of Houston (institution code: 6870)
- Three letters of recommendation
- A brief statement of intent expressing reasons for pursuing graduate study in the particular area of interest
- A portfolio consisting of at least 20 slides. The portfolio selection
should represent a student's most recent and most consistent work. Slides
should have relevant information about the size, medium, and date of
the work as well as an indication of the slide's top side. Slides should
be numbered, ordered sequentially in a plastic sleeve, and accompanied
by explanatory notes for use when the slides are viewed. All submitted
work will be returned. The School of Art primarily uses the evidence
of work that candidates have completed in the area to which they have
applied as the basis for granting or not granting admission to Master
of Fine Arts candidates. A candidate's presentation of his or her art
work is therefore extremely important. Slide quality also plays a significant
part in the application process.
Conditional admission may be granted to students whose overall grade
point average on the last 60 hours of course credit is at least 2.67 (A=4.00),
whose grade point average in the discipline is at least 3.00, and whose
scores on the Graduate Record Examination are high enough to indicate
probable success in the program. The materials requested above should
be sent to:
