Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management
Degree Requirements
Master of Science in Hospitality Management
All graduate students will receive a copy of their degree plan following
admission into the M.S. program. The graduate advisor following the evaluation
of all prior degrees and course work will develop this degree plan. All
M.S. degree candidates must complete a minimum of 36 semester credit hours
of graduate course work at the University of Houston in order to receive
the Master of Science degree.
The curriculum of the program requires that students complete courses in two areas: (1) hospitality management core and
(2) area of specialization in elective courses. The credit hours necessary for graduation are as follows:

Prerequisite Courses
Prerequisite requirements are not mandatory.
Competence in the areas of finance and accounting, organizational behavior,
marketing, and management information systems is expected of all M.S.
degree candidates. Competency in a second language in addition to English
is highly recommended. The courses offered at the University of Houston
that meet these requirements are as follows:
Hotel and Restaurant Management Core Courses 19 credit hours
Core courses focus on both the advanced applications and the analysis of specialized areas of the hospitality industry. Students may choose to concentrate in Food Service Administration, Lodging Administration, or Hospitality Administration. The following are the core courses.

Core curriculum hours may not be waived under any circumstances.
Elective, Focus and Support Courses 17 credit semester hours
All students are required to take 17 credits of elective , focus and support
coursework. Students may take up to 9 credit semester hours of this coursework
outside the college of HRM and subject to the Graduate Advisor’s approval.
Coursework taken in other colleges should be selected on the basis of
appropriateness to the student's degree objectives and must be a graduate
level course. Student must obtain approval of the Graduate Advisor and
the department concerned prior to registration.

The Dual Masters M.S./M.B.A. Degrees
The Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management and the
C.T. Bauer College of Business Administration offer a concurrent degree program that
enables students to prepare for careers in which business and hospitality
overlap. By pursuing both the Master of Science in Hospitality Management
and the Master of Business Administration degrees concurrently, students
can complete both degrees in a shorter time period than if they were to
pursue the two independently. The M.S./M.B.A. joint program requires a
minimum of 84 semester hours.
