Degree Requirements and Regulations

The College of Education has a broad mission, the key feature of which is the preparation of professionals who develop the full human potential of the people they serve in schools and a wide variety of non-school settings by:
  • Preparing professional individuals to conduct research and provide services and education in the health sciences.
  • Educating practitioners for roles in teaching, counseling, psychology, administration and applied practice;
  • Advancing the knowledge and skills of experienced practitioners;
  • Advancing conceptual and methodological knowledge to conduct research;
  • Advancing knowledge through scholarly investigation; and
  • Leading and serving the organizations that benefit the communities of practice and academic study.

The College is guided by its “Collaboration for Learning and Leading” motto and six guiding values and commitments: knowledge, skills, and dispositions: instructional and informational technology; diversity: professional development; assessment; and standards.

The College offers a range of graduate programs. The Master of Education (M.Ed.) and Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) degrees are offered from the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Psychology, and Health and Human Performance. A Master of Science (MS) degree is offered by the Department of Health and Human Performance. Doctor of Philosophy (PH.D.) degrees are offered in Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology and Individual Differences, School Psychology, and Kinesiology.

The College is approved by the State of Texas to offer the Provisional and the Professional Teaching Certificate, Texas Standard Principal Certificate, as well as certification for superintendent, counselor, educational diagnostician, generic special education, and reading specialist. Endorsement may also be secured in bilingual education, English as a second language, gifted and talented education, and early childhood education.

Accreditation and Memberships

The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). Its Ph.D.Counseling Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association. The College's educator certification programs are authorized by the Texas State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).The College's Human Development Lab School is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) The Dietetic Internship program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Dietetic Education (CADE). The program is a post-baccalaureate, supervised practice program which qualifies graduates to take the examination to become a Registered Dietician.
