Tuition and Fees

The University of Houston is a state-assisted institution. For Texas residents, tuition for the 2002–2003 school year is $240 per semester hour. The course load for the first year of law school is 31 semester hours full-time and 28 semester hours part-time.

The 2002–2003 tuition for nonresidents is $340 per semester hour. Approximately $1430 in fees also is required each semester for full-time students. Fees for part-time students are contingent on the number of semester hours for which the student is enrolled. Tuition and fee charges are set by the Texas legislature and the University of Houston System Board of Regents and are subject to change without notice.

The state legislature has provided two options for payment of fees during regular semesters. You may pay the balance in full or in three installments. You may pay in cash or by check or money order payable to the University of Houston.

Financial Aid

The University of Houston Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) administers a variety of financial aid programs.

Each year you apply for financial aid, you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Results of the need analysis are mailed to you and your school within four to six weeks. The OSFA will determine the financial award by subtracting the expected student/family contribution from the cost of attendance. Once need is determined, the OSFA will put together a financial aid package that typically consists of:

  1. Grants
  2. Institutional Scholarships
  3. Perkins Loans (need-based)
  4. Federal Stafford Student Loans (need-based)
  5. Federal Unsubsidized Stafford Student Loans (non need-based)
The University of Houston begins awarding April 1 for the following fall semester. This only means that those filing early are processed first. Early submission of financial aid documentation is encouraged as state and institutional grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Financial aid awards typically are mailed after May 1 and proceed throughout the summer.

The sequence should progress as follows:

  1. Student submits FAFSA information. This processing takes four to six weeks to complete. Student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR).

  2. The Financial Aid award letter is mailed from the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid, notifying the student of the award.

  3. Student then submits loan documentation to the Law Center for processing.
If a student has received financial aid in the past, we recommend that the student remain with the same lender.

Retain copies of all financial aid information submitted to UH and to other financial aid institutions and save all check stubs.

You may contact the Law Center's Student Financial Aid Advisor at (713) 743-2269. The advisor will be happy to assist you with your financial aid questions and concerns.

Scholarships

The Office of Admissions offers a number of Dean's Scholarships to each entering class. These merit scholarships vary in number and amount and are renewable for the duration of the law program, provided that the student maintains the required grade point average. Each accepted applicant is automatically considered for a Dean's Scholarship, and no separate application is required. Scholarship funds for part-time students are quite limited. University and UH system scholarships are also available, with recipients selected through a highly competitive nomination process. To ensure proper consideration for all scholarships, it is to your advantage to submit your application as early as possible and to take the LSAT by the early fall test date. Questions about scholarships should be directed to the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.
