MS in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology
Degree Requirements
Applications are not accepted and students are not admitted for the Master's of Science degree programs in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology as a terminal degree option. However, when students enrolled in the Doctor of Philosophy programs in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology are unable to meet the requirements of the doctoral degree, the Master's of Science Degree may be granted to students who meet the requirements of the MS degree.The degree tracks in Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology consist of a core of courses common to both tracks and specialty course tracks in Pharmaceutics or Pharmacology. These specialty tracks provide essential training in the elected major discipline. The course of study to complete the degree is anticipated to take approximately two to two and one-half years to complete.
The student must complete a minimum of 30 hours for the M.S. degree, including 6 hours of thesis and a minimum of 24 hours of M.S. degree courses approved by the departmental faculty. A maximum of 3 hours of special problems, exclusive of specific lecture/laboratory special problems courses, may be counted toward the 24 hours minimum course load. In accordance with the University of Houston guidelines, the department may approve a maximum of 9 hours of transfer credits from another institution.
A cumulative grade point average of at least 3.00 (A= 4.00) must be maintained in all graduate level courses required for the M.S. degree in order to obtain an advanced degree from the College of Pharmacy. Graduate-level courses are defined as all courses required for the M.S. degree as defined either by the department and/or thesis committee.
Students who have received a grade of C or lower in courses that are part of the student's degree plan, totaling 8 hours or more, will be dismissed from the program. In addition, a student with a D, F, or I as the most recent grade in a graduate-level course for a degree plan will not be eligible for graduation.
In addition to course work, students must complete an original research project, write a thesis and successfully defend the thesis before their thesis committee.
