Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management

Admission Requirements

Admission to the M.H.M. program is open to qualified applicants with a U.S. four-year bachelor's degree or its equivalent to a U.S. four-year bachelor's in all areas of discipline, including hotel and restaurant management. Candidates will be evaluated based on their previous academic records, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, and hospitality experience. For those seeking graduate assistantship positions, an oral and written English skills test is required (SPEAK).

Applicants must submit:

  1. Completed graduate application form.
  2. Two official original transcripts including proof of degree conferred (for international applicants, transcripts must be officially translated into English). Applicants should have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 (A=4.0) for the last 60 semester hours of undergraduate course work.
  3. GRE or GMAT scores (for Dual Masters applicants, GMAT is required). Official test scores should be on record with the University of Houston before applying. The institution code for the University of Houston is 6870. The Educational Testing Service will send the scores to the University of Houston about six weeks after the test date if requested by the student at the time of testing.   4. Personal statement of intent (a 250- word, double-spaced, typed essay).
  5. Resume or curriculum vitae.
  6. Three letters of recommendation (use the form supplied in the MHM booklet).
  7. The college requires that all applicants submit non-refundable processing and evaluation fees in the form of cashier check or money order with the completed application for admission.

International applicants must submit all of the above materials plus the following:

  1. In addition to the college fee, an international applicant is required to submit a non-refundable fee for the Office of International Admissions in the form of a cashier's check or money order made payable to the University of Houston. Only applicants whose fees have been paid will be reviewed. Please contact the Office of Graduate Programs at the Conrad N. Hilton College for the current fee amount.
  2. International applicants must also submit scores from a TOEFL or Test of English as a Foreign Language scoring at least 600. Information regarding the TOEFL is available at www.toefl.org, or write to ETS, PO BOX 6161, Princeton, New Jersey 08541-6161.
  3. International applicants must complete the Letter of Financial Backing form supported by a current bank statement from a reputable financial institution.
  4. Statement of Understanding signed by the applicant and sponsor (use the form supplied in the International Graduate Admission Booklet).
  5. Two passport-sized photographs with their name affixed to the back of each photo.

Postbaccalaureate Students

Students who have earned one or more baccalaureate or higher degrees at an accredited institution and who is seeking this classification rather than the graduate status must apply to the Office of Admissions.

Postbaccalaureate students may petition to enroll in graduate level course work through the Office of Graduate Programs. Should a postbaccalaureate student gain admission into the M.H.M. program, a maximum of nine credit hours of graduate-level course work will be accepted toward the graduate degree plan.
