Master of Arts Degree Requirements

The University of Houston confers the Master of Arts degree in anthropology, economics, political science, public administration, and sociology. The master's degree in psychology is awarded only during the course of study for the Doctor of Philosophy degree. Each department has its own requirements beyond the general ones stated below.

General Requirements

1. Thirty to 36 semester hours of approved courses, at least 23 semester hours of which must be at the 6000 level or above
2. A qualifying examination in the major field before the completion of one-half of the course work, if required by the department
3. A final comprehensive examination, if required by the department
4. 3.00 cumulative grade point average
5. Adherence to the Four-C Rule

   Residency
   
   At least 30 semester hours of credit for the master's degree must be earned in residence at the University of Houston campus.

   Transferred Courses
   
   No more than six semester hours of transferred courses may be applied to the Master of Arts degree. Determination of course equivalency of transferred work resides with the proposed major department.

   Time Limit
   
   A master's degree program must be completed within five years of the date of enrollment at the University of Houston.
