Master of Arts Program

The Department of Anthropology offers two tracks in its Master of Arts program.Plan I: Thesis Option is designed primarily for students who plan to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy degree, while the Plan II: Nonthesis Option is for students who plan to enter careers as professional applied anthropologists upon completion of the master's degree.

Admission Requirements

In addition to meeting the college graduate admission requirements, applicants must meet the following minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the Master of Arts in Anthropology program:

Requirements include a baccalaureate degree in anthropology or an undergraduate degree that includes 24 semester hours in anthropology; a 3.00 grade point average (A=4.00) in the most recent 60 semester hours of undergraduate and/or graduate courses; Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores; and three letters of recommendation. (Verbal, quantitative, and analytical GRE scores are examined separately and evaluated as one information source in the total application.)

Degree Requirements

In addition to meeting the college master's degree requirements, applicants must complete the following minimum requirements for the Master of Arts in Anthropology program:

Plan I Program Requirements (Thesis Option)

Two courses selected from ANTH 6311, 6312, 6313, 6314, and 6315, one of which must be in the major area of concentration.	6

Additional approved course work at the 4000 level or above, including a minimum of 12 semester hours at the 6000 level or above. Six semester hours may be taken outside the department. Courses at the 3000 level may be taken as remedial work only, depending on the needs and background of the student	18

Students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above and satisfactorily complete a comprehensive examination.

Plan II Program Requirements (Nonthesis Option)

Special Academic Regulations
