Tuition and Fees

The University of Houston is a state-assisted institution. For Texas residents, tuition for the 1998-99 school year is $160 per semester hour. The course load for the first year of law school is 31 semester hours full-time and 28 semester hours part-time.

THE 1998-99 tuition for nonresidents is $320 per semester hour. Approximately $400 in fees also is required each semester for full-time students. Fees for part-time students are contingent on the number of semester hours for which the student is enrolled. Tuition and fee charges are set by the Texas legislature and the University of Houston System Board of Regents and are subject to change without notice.

The state legislature has provided two options for payment of fees during regular semesters. You may pay the balance in full or in three installments. You may pay in cash or by check or money order payable to the University of Houston.

Financial Aid

The University of Houston Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid (OSFA) administers a variety of financial aid programs. Once accepted, students will receive a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

The SFA requires a financial transcript from every college attended, even if financial aid was not received.

Each year you apply for financial aid, you must complete the FAFSA. Results of the need analysis are mailed to you and your school within four to six weeks. The OSFA office will determine the financial award by subtracting the expected student/family contribution from the cost of attendance. Once need is determined, the SFA office will put together a financial aid package that typically consists of:

• Federal Stafford Student Loan (need-based)
• Unsubsidized Stafford (non need-based)
• Private Loans (Law Access or Law Loans)
• Institutional Scholarships
• Grants

The priority deadline for filing a financial aid application is April 1 for the following fall semester. This only means that those filing prior to the deadline are processed first. Early submission of financial aid documentation is encouraged as state grants are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Financial aid awards typically begin after May 1 and proceed throughout the summer.

The sequence should progress as follows:

1. Student mails FAFSA information. This processing takes four to six weeks to complete. Student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR).
2. Student submits financial aid transcripts to the UH Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
   
3. The SFA award letter is mailed from OSFA, notifying the student of the award.
4. Student then submits loan documentation to OSFA for processing. We recommend either Law Loans (1-800-984-0190) or Law Access (1-800-282-1550) loan packages. This information is submitted to SFA for processing. (This should take three weeks.)

If a student has received financial aid in the past, we recommend that the student remain with the same lender.

Retain copies of all financial aid information submitted to UH and to other financial aid institutions and save all check stubs.

If your lender or intended lender is a Texas lender, please do not submit a loan application to the university. If the OSFA office determines that you are eligible for a Stafford Student Loan, a computer-generated application will be sent to you with your financial aid award notice.

If your lender is a non-Texas lender, you will be required to secure the application that is appropriate for the state in which your lender is located and submit that to the OSFA office.

Scholarships

The Law Center administers a limited number of merit scholarships with moneys provided through tuition and with funds given by alumni, friends, foundations and other sources. The Law Center considers all accepted applicants for these scholarships.
