College of Humanities, Fine Arts and Communication
Master of Fine Arts in Theatre

Admission Requirements

In addition to fulfilling graduate school admission requirements and requirements listed under the Master of Arts degree, applicants must provide three letters of recommendation from teachers or professional colleagues familiar with the applicant's work.

Degree Requirements

The School of Theatre offers the Master of Arts and the Master of Fine Arts degrees. Graduate courses in dance may be applied toward either the Master of Arts or the Master of Fine Arts degrees. No more than nine semester hours in 4000-level and higher courses outside the school will be allowed.

Students must complete a minimum of 45 semester hours in advanced and graduate courses, including THEA 6331, 6336, 6362, a theatre history class, and a nine-semester-hour internship with a professional theatre establishment approved by the school director. Beyond fulfilling these requirements, students and their graduate advisors will tailor the program of study to suit students' individual needs and to prepare them for careers in professional theatre. The school may also require the student's proficiency in a foreign language if the student's area of specialization warrants it.
