program and approval of director of graduate studies. Advanced creative work,
under faculty supervision, in selected areas of theatre production. May be

6320: Stage Management
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: graduate standing or consent
of instructor. Techniques of planning, organizing, rehearsing, and running
theatrical productions as stage manager, with emphasis on management strategies
to serve differing situations.
6321: Scene Painting
Cr. 3. Prerequisite: graduate standing or consent of
instructor. Series of demonstrations and practical application projects using
materials, tools, and the techniques of textural and illusionistic scenic art.
6331: Acting and Directing Theory
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of
director of graduate studies in theatre. Major statements of eminent theatre
artists from the Greeks to the present.
6332: Acting
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director of graduate
studies in theatre. May be repeated for credit with approval of chair. Ensemble
training; actor's problems in preparing for major roles.
6333: Directing
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director of graduate
studies in theatre. May be repeated for credit with approval of chair. Training
in directing oriented toward the production of a full-length play.
6334: Movement and Mime
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director of
graduate studies in theatre. May be repeated for credit with approval of chair.
History and techniques of mime and pantomime, general stage movement, period
styles, fencing, and gymnastic techniques. Presentation of mime play.
6335: Scenery and Lighting Design
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of
director of graduate studies in theatre. May be repeated for credit. Creative
function of the scene and lighting designer in preparing visual elements of
theatrical production.
6336: Technical Production
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director of
graduate studies in theatre. Visual elements (scenic, costume, and lighting
design) in a production as approached by the designer, director, and actor.
6337: Costume, Makeup Design
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director
of graduate studies in theatre. May be repeated for credit. Creative function
of costume and makeup design in the production process.
6338: Musical Theatre Collaboration
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of
instructor. Techniques of collaboration for composers, lyricists, bookwriters,
directors, choreographers, producers, and designers in performance of new
musical theatre works.
6339: Directing Shakespeare
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director of
graduate studies in theatre. An examination and analysis of selected
Shakespeare texts from the perspective of editing, interpretation, and staging.
6340: Costume History
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of director of
graduate studies in theatre. Survey of costume history and design from Egyptian
through modern times, with a concentration on the eighteenth, nineteenth, and
twentieth centuries.
6343: Voice for the Theatre
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: THEA 3331 or
equivalent, or approval of Director of Graduate Studies in Theatre. Overview
and comparison of current methods of vocal training, development of director's
skill in recognizing, identifying, and correcting vocal problems as they arise
in rehearsal.
6344: Musical Theatre Workshop
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of
instructor. Interpretation, performance, and production of a new musical with
visiting professionals.
6345: Dialects for the Stage
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: THEA 3331 or
equivalent, or approval of instructor. May be repeated for credit. Advanced
studies in specific regional American and foreign dialects.
6350: Teaching Practicum
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: consent of instructor or
director of graduate studies in Theatre. Required of all teaching assistants.
Analysis of textbook and instructional materials and preparation for
demonstration and testing in lower division undergraduate theatre production
courses.
6362: Dramatic Theory and Criticism

director of graduate studies in theatre. History of major creative and critical
theories of dramaturgy from the Greeks to the present.

6376: Elizabethan Theatre History

Director of Graduate Studies in Theatre. Study of the English theatre 1560 to
1642 with special emphasis on theatre architecture and staging practices.
6377: Realism
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of Director of Graduate
Studies in Theatre. Study of theoretical premises, representative scripts, and
production values in realistic drama from 1870 to the present.
6378: History of Shakespeare Production
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of
Director of Graduate Studies in Theatre. Study of aesthetic concepts and
production approaches in Shakespearean productions from 1660 to the present.
6391:6392:6393: Internship in Theatre Production
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
approval of director of graduate studies in theatre. Residency in a
professional theatre, subject to approval of the chair, as the culminating
requirement for the Master of Fine Arts degree in theatre.
6396: Selected Topics in Theatre
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: approval of
director of graduate studies in theatre. Will be identified by a specific title
each time it is offered. May be repeated for credit when topics vary.
6397: Selected Periods in History of the Theatre
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
approval of director of graduate studies in theatre. May be repeated for credit
with approval of chair. A specified period in theatre history (Greek-Roman;
Medieval; Renaissance) with emphasis on methodology and comparative studies.
6399-7399: Master's Thesis
