Degree Requirements Candidates must complete a total of 30 semester hours in courses numbered 3000 or above for which graduate credit is accepted by the department. Twenty-four of these 30 semester hours must be in the Department of Philosophy, including a minimum of 12 semester hours in regular graduate seminars in the department and 6 semester hours for the preparation of a thesis. Courses taken outside the department will count toward the 30 required hours only with the approval of the director of graduate studies. All candidates will be required to submit a Master's thesis in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master's degree. The Master's thesis must demonstrate candidates' competence to do research and scholarly writing. It may, but need not, be a work that is based upon a paper previously prepared for a course or a seminar. The thesis committee will include two members of the Department of Philosophy and one member of another department. Candidates must select the thesis director from within the department. Upon recommendation of the department chair, the dean of the college will appoint the thesis committee. The thesis must be approved by the committee following an oral examination on the thesis administered by the committee.
