Course Load
For the fall and spring semesters, full time enrollment is nine semester hours for master's students and nine semester hours for doctoral students. Doctoral students shall not be required to register for more than nine hours except in certain instances. Students should contact the department of their major to determine the expected semester course load.

A full-time course load during the summer is six semester hours.

Application for Candidacy
Only the departments of English and History require students to apply for candidacy. Master of Arts degree students in History should file an application for admission to candidacy with the department office. As soon as they have completed the following, the college office will give final approval:

  1. At least 12 semester hours of graduate work at this institution.

  2. The department's qualifying examination, if required.

  3. All special requirements of the college and the department major. After the college office has verified completion of these requirements, the student will receive a formal notice of admission to candidacy for the degree. All doctoral students must also file for candidacy and should do so when they complete the department's comprehensive or qualifying examination. Doctoral students must file for candidacy at least one semester prior to graduation (e.g., for a fall graduation, file in the summer; for a spring graduation, file in the fall).
Candidacy application forms for graduate students are available in the college office or the departmental office.

Ad Hoc Interdisciplinary Doctoral Degree Option

Departments granting Doctor of Philosophy degrees may modify their Ph.D. course requirements in individual cases to permit a larger share of course work to take place outside the department. When course requirements are modified, the department should submit the design of the ad hoc interdisciplinary curriculum and the names of sponsoring department and supporting department graduate faculty members, who are responsible for directing the student through the curriculum and dissertation, to the dean for approval. If the dean approves the curriculum, a copy of the dean's written approval will be forwarded to the Office of the Senior Vice President/Provost. Doctoral-level students interested in this option should talk to the director of graduate studies in the student's department about the possibility of modifying course requirements.
