College of Humanities, Fine Arts and Communication Admission Requirements The following are minimum requirements for unconditional admission to the college's graduate programs. Most departments have additional requirements, and applicants should consult the appropriate departmental advisor. For unconditional admission to a master's program, applicants must have earned a bachelor's degree in an appropriate field from an accredited institution and have achieved an overall grade point average of 3.00 (A=4.00) in the last 60 hours of course credit and a grade point average of at least 3.00 in the discipline. For admission to a doctoral program, applicants must have earned a master's degree (or have completed 30 semester hours of graduate work) and have a grade point average of at least 3.00 (A=4.00) in all graduate work attempted. The Department of English requires a grade point average of at least 3.50 in all graduate work attempted. The Department of History requires a grade point average of at least 3.67 in all graduate work attempted. Applicants must have acceptable Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores on the General Aptitude Test, and applicants in English and History must also submit the Advanced (Subject) Test in the field of their major. In Music, M.M. applicants are not required to take the Music Subject Test, but D.M.A. applicants must do so. A score of at least 550 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for international graduate students. The Department of English requires a TOEFL score of at least 620 for students entering the applied English linguistics program and of at least 600 for all other applicants. International graduate students should also refer to the academic regulations and admission requirements for international students in the general information section of this catalog. The college will grant conditional admission to students whose overall grade point average on the last 60 hours of course credit is at least 2.67 (A=4.00), whose grade point average in the discipline is at least 3.00, and whose scores on the Graduate Record Examination are high enough to indicate probable success in the graduate program. The college will not grant conditional admission to doctoral program applicants or to international students whose degrees were not earned at an accredited United States institution.
