General Information

The goals of the College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communication graduate programs are to broaden students' understanding of life, to enable them to play more meaningful roles in society, and to prepare them for various careers.

Graduate students acquire both intensive knowledge of their disciplines and expertise in the methods and skills of the discipline. Through scholarship, research, and creative experience and performance, students develop a critical appreciation of the finest works in their discipline and the ability to analyze and contribute to the body of knowledge about the humanities and the arts. The graduate programs also prepare students for advanced work in specific areas of the humanities, the fine arts, and communication.

The college offers research opportunities and specialized training leading to the degrees of Master of Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Music, Doctor of Musical Arts, and Doctor of Philosophy.

In addition to eight academic departments and schools, the College of Humanities, Fine Arts, and Communication also includes the African American Studies Program, American Cultures Program, the Center for Mexican American Studies, the Religious Studies Program, and the Women's Studies Program. Although these programs do not offer graduate degrees or courses, they do offer both opportunities for advanced research and certain kinds of financial resources. For more information, students should contact the individual programs in which they are interested.
