Degree Requirements

Plan I: Thesis Option

Students must complete a minimum of 24 semester hours of approved graduate courses (30 semester hours for applied English linguistics majors) and six semester hours of thesis work. The required courses may be in literature, creative writing, linguistics, rhetoric, critical theory, or technical writing; however, the required distribution over these areas varies with the major chosen.

Plan II: Non-thesis Option

Students must complete a minimum of 36 semester hours of approved graduate courses. The required distribution over the areas of literature, linguistics, rhetoric, critical theory, or technical writing varies with the major chosen. Applied English linguistics majors must pass a final comprehensive examination. Plan II is not available to creative writing majors.
