Computer Resources
Computer Accounts
Graduate students can get computer accounts that allow access to electronic
mail, compilers, Usenet News service, the World Wide Web, and text processing.
Accounts are available on either Bayou, Jetson, UHUPVM1, the UH Web Server, and
the Instructional Support Network. To apply for an account, go to the Central
Site Computing Center (110 Social Work) with a current Student ID card. Forms
are also available online at:
http://www.uh.edu/infotech/services/forms/.
The Central Site Computing Center, the general use computing lab, is located in
110 Social Work. Consultants are available to provide walk-in assistance 24
hours a day, seven days a week. Approximately 150 Macintosh and Windows NT
workstations are available to write and print documents, or to access the
Internet for research. Other available resources include scanners, color
printers, some technical documentation, and training rooms for many of the

Computer Labs
Biochemical & Biophysical Sciences Computer Lab

Located in 402G UH Science Center, this lab, open Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., has Microsoft Office, StatView and NextStep software.The
lab also offers NeXT hardware, SGI Indigo and X terminal availability. Contact

Biology Computing Lab

Located in 203 Science Bldg., this lab is open Monday through Friday from 8:30
a.m. to 5 p.m., and evenings by arrangement. This lab has curriculum-intensive

Center for Information Technology in Education

Located in 329 Farish Hall, you may call for information on hours of operation.
This lab has Microsoft Works, Office, other educational software available, and
also offers SAS, SPSS and Systat. Contact Jerry D. Price, Jr. at (713)

Center for Students with DisABILITIES

Located in 307 Student Service Center, this lab is open Monday and Tuesday 8:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Wednesday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Consulting is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This

Central Site Computing Center

Located in 110 Social Work, this lab is open from Monday at 7 a.m. through
Saturday at 12 p.m.; Sunday from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. Consulting is available
Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Site has word processing, spreadsheet, graphics and
other software available, and also offers NeXT systems and terminals. Contact

Communication Computer Lab

Located in 243 and 244 Communications, this lab is open Monday through Friday
from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and offers consulting during lab hours This lab has
Microsoft Word, Office, PageMaker and other software available. Contact Byron

Computer Design Center

Located in 301 Architecture, users may call for information on lab hours. This
lab has CAD, MacDraw and many other software packages available. Contact

Computer Science Computer Lab

Located in 547 Hoffman Hall, this lab is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00
a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Saturday from 9:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. This lab has a variety of software for computer science course

Engineering Computing Center

Located in W129 Engineering Bldg. D3, this lab is open Monday through Thursday
from 8:00 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 12
p.m. to 6 p.m. This lab has only engineering software for personal computers,
but also offers NeXT systems and DEC Alpha Stations and has many different

English Writing Lab

Located in 45 Heyne Building, users may call for information on lab hours.
Consulting will be available during lab hours. This lab has Microsoft Word,
grammar and composition software available. Contact David Rossi at (713)

Foreign Language Lab

Located in 309 Arnold Hall, this lab is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00
a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Consulting is available
during lab hours This lab has software for many languages. Contact Duane

GSSW Computer Learning Center

Located in 217 Social Work Building, users may call for information on lab
hours and availability of consulting. This lab has WordPerfect software.

Health & Human Performance Lab

Located in 141 Melcher Gymnasium, this lab is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This lab has word processing and statistical packages available. Contact Dr.

History Computer Lab

Located in 524 Arnold Hall, this lab is open Monday through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Contact Steven Mintz at (713) 743-3109.
Honors Center

Located in 16 Anderson Library, this lab is open Monday through Friday from
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This lab requires that users supply their own software.

Law Computer Center

Located in 18 Law Center Library, this lab is open the same hours as the Law

Learning Support Services Media Resource Center

Located in 27 University Center Satellite, this lab is open Monday through
Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This lab has many different software

M. D. Anderson Library Computer Center

Located in the Current Journals room of M.D. Anderson Library, users may call
(713) 743-1050 for information on lab hours. Some consulting help is available.
This lab has word processing, drawing, spread sheet and other software packages

Optometry Computer Lab

Located in 2225 Optometry, this lab is open Monday through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This lab has Microsoft Word, Excel and Works, and Novell

Psychology/Statistics Computer Lab

Located in 201 Heyne Building, users may call for information on lab hours.
This lab has Word for Windows, SAS, LISREL and BMDP software available. Contact

Research & Instructional Computing Services (RICS)

Located in 275 Melcher Hall, this lab is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30
a.m. to 10 p.m.; Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from
10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Consulting is available during lab hours. This lab has
many software packages available, including statistical packages. Contact

Residential Life & Housing Computer Labs

Located throughout the residence halls, users should call for locations. These
labs are open 24 hours, Monday through Friday. Contact Michael Redmond at (713)

Social Science Data Lab

Located in 446 Hoffman Hall, this lab is open Monday through Friday from 9:00
a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.. Consulting is
available during lab hours. This lab only has data analysis packages, but also

Speech Clinic Lab

Located in 146-F South Office Annex, this lab is open Monday through Friday
from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. This lab has Microsoft Word and Excel software

Technology Cameron Computing Lab

Information Technology comprises several departments that work to assist
faculty members with their computing and networking needs: Central Computing
and Telecommunications Services, Customer Services, Information Services, and
University Media Services.
Central Computing and Telecommunications Services maintains and supports
the
academic and administrative computer systems, as well as the University's data,
voice and video networks on campus. In the Computing Center, CCTS maintains
computers running VM/ESA, VMS, and UNIX, as well as NEC SX-3 and IBM SP/2
supercomputers.

Customer Services provides computing and network support for research,
instructional, and administrative customers. It comprises the Central Site
Computing Center, the Faculty Lab, Emerging Technologies, Instructional
Computing, Training and Documentation, and the IT Support Center.
The IT Support Center can provide computing and technical assistance
across all
supported hardware and software. In addition, ITSC provides free, non-credit
short courses, seminars, and technical documentation to acquaint faculty
members with the University's computing systems and services.
The IT Help Desk is available at (713) 743-1411 between 8:00 a.m. and
5:00
p.m., Monday through Friday. The Central Site Computing Center in 110 Social
Work provides around-the-clock lab assistance, general information and account
generation.
Information Services manages the main campus Web server and other
Internet
services and publishes The Open Channel, a free newsletter that provides
information to help students, faculty and staff use and understand UH machines
and services. Subscribe by calling (713) 743-1505, filling out the web-based
subscription form at http://www.uh.edu/tocsub, or sending electronic mail to
infoserv@uh.edu.
University Media Services (56 M.D. Anderson Library) provides a wide
range of
on-campus media services for personal or classroom needs. Services are
professionally produced in a timely manner, and are available at reasonable
costs. Many services are one-day or next day, while others take longer.
Satisfaction is always guaranteed.
University Media Services is conveniently located in the basement of the M.D.
Anderson Library, near the library copy center. Hours are 8:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Special Services:
University Media Services is the home of UH Instructional Television (ITV)
where graduate and undergraduate classes are broadcast live to remote sites in
the metropolitan Houston area. ITV classes are also rebroadcast over PBS
(Channel 8) and several cable television networks, and are available on video
tape.
All ITV studios are located in the basement of the M.D. Anderson Library.
Studio-1 is in room 14, Studio-2 in room 56B, and Studio-3 in room 58. Students
attending the studio section should arrive no later than five minutes before
the start of class.
Studio-2 (Room 56B) is a videoconference receive site. Satellite and digital
videoconferences can be scheduled in this room. Studio-2 seats 28 participants.
