About the College

The College of Education endeavors to promote an educational system adequate for and responsive to a rapidly changing society. The college commits itself to preparing teachers, counselors, psychologists, school and higher education administrators, and professionals for a variety of educational settings, including work in social agencies, medical facilities, businesses, and government posts. The college offers students both a broad range of innovative programs and the opportunity to learn about recent developments in educational practice and thought. The university's urban setting also offers students the opportunity to work with learners in a variety of educational settings.

The college offers a range of graduate programs. The Master of Education and Doctor of Education degrees are offered from the Departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies, Educational Psychology, and Health and Human Performance. A Master of Science degree is also offered by the Department of Health and Human Performance. The Doctor of Philosophy degrees are offered in Counseling Psychology and Educational Psychology and Individual Differences.

The college offers both the Provisional and the Professional Teaching Certificate, and certification programs for instructional supervision, mid-management administration, superintendent, counselor, educational diagnostician, generic special education, and reading specialist. Endorsement for certificates may be secured in bilingual education, English as a second language, gifted and talented education, and early childhood education. Specific requirements for graduate and certification programs are listed in each department's section.

Accreditation

The College of Education is accredited by the Texas Education Agency, the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, and is a member of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the University Council for Educational Administration. The doctoral program in Counseling Psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association.

Off-Campus Instruction

The College of Education offers courses at several off-campus sites to accommodate the needs of teachers and administrators in those areas. While the courses scheduled and locations served vary depending upon identified needs and available resources, recent sites for off-campus instruction have included the West Houston Institute at Cinco Ranch, North Houston Institute, Ft. Bend and various school districts within the Houston area. Courses are also offered each semester over InterAct television and broadcast to schools in the Houston area.
