6310: Multicultural Curriculum, K-12 Cr. 3. (3-0). Examination of monocultural
and multicultural curricula. Exploration of multicultural concepts for
achieving cultural pluralism.
6311: Education in a Multicultural Society Cr. 3. (3-0). Examination of
psychological, sociological, political, and economic forces on education within
various communities.
6360: Foundations of Educational Sociology Cr. 3. (3-0). Major sociological
perspectives are drawn upon to interpret research on the organization and
processes of schooling in their social, political, and economic contexts.
6370: Cultural Foundations of American Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Analysis of
social, political, and economic forces that have contributed to the unique role
of education in the history of the United States.
7309: Contemporary Philosophies in Multicultural Education Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisite: CUST 6310, CUST 6311, or consent of instructor. Analysis of the
theoretical and philosophical foundations of contemporary multicultural
education programs, policies, and practices at the K-12 and higher education
levels.
7310: Seminar and Laboratory Experiences in Multicultural Education Cr. 3.
(3-0). Prerequisite: CUST 6311 or consent of instructor. Site of examination of
intracultural and intercultural dimensions regarding values, group identity,
and communications.
7311: Research in Multicultural Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: EPSY
8320, EPSY 8322, or consent of instructor. Examination of research literature
concerning multicultural education. Application of research designs such as
ethnographic, emicetic, and biosocial psychology for research in multicultural
education.
7350: Education for Rational Thinking Cr. 3. (3-0). Introduction to the theory,
knowledge, and skills for teaching rational thinking and logical inquiry to
children and youth.
7360: Global Education Cr. 3. (3-0). An investigation of the concept of global
education, including cross-cultural and state of the planet awareness, along
with a consideration of other images of the world. Includes a field experience
in a foreign country.
8360: Comparative Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Analysis of the organization and
functioning of education in the social, political, and economic context of
selected societies.
8361: Cultural Analysis and Educational Research Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
Approval of instructor. This course teaches cultural theory and its application
to qualitative data analysis. Included are analytic procedures developed with
cultural geography, sociolinguistics, pragmatics and discourse analysis.
Students learn advanced procedures and practice on qualitative data sets.
8370: Origins of Modern Educational Thought Cr. 3. (3-0). Educational
philosophies and practices from earliest primitive cultures through the
Reformation. Parallels between past and present educational thought and
practices.
8372: History and Philosophy of Modern Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Educational
philosophies and practices since the Reformation with emphasis on the growing
importance of public education.
8375: History and Philosophy of Higher Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
consent of instructor. History of the philosophical rationales and institutions
of postsecondary education. Emphasis is upon American colleges and universities
with attention to their ancient and medieval origins and counterparts in other
countries.
8378: Current Issues in Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Classroom teaching and methods,
curriculum guidance, administration, and related problems; stress on basic
consistent approach to pressing problems and current issues.
8380: Philosophy of Education Cr. 3. (3-0). A survey of education philosophies
and their relationships to American educational goals, systems, and curricular
approaches.
