6397: Practicum for First-Year Teachers Cr. 3. (3-0). This course offers
first-year teachers an opportunity to participate, over a two-semester period,
in a total of 45 hours of workshops/seminars designed to support them in a)
applying their teacher education knowledge to the full responsibilities of
day-to-day teaching, b) reflecting on challenges and events occurring in their
classrooms and schools, and c) engaging in cooperative solving of the
inevitable problems that arise in the beginning teacher experience.

Review of recent research and theory illuminating the nature, purposes, and
meaning of play as a critical early childhood teaching strategy.
7302: Curriculum Construction in the Social Studies Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
ELED 6301, SEDE 6301, or CUIN 6335. Examination of curriculum development
processes and the appropriate application to social studies curriculum.
7305: Courseware and Presentation Tools Cr.3.(0-3). Prerequisite: CUIN 6320 or
equivalent. This course presents students with an overview of a range of
software applications with which they can develop educational and instructional
materials. The course provides a conceptual framework for understanding
software design as well as the opportunity for hands-on experience with a
variety of software packages.
7307: Managing Computer and Information Centers Cr.3.(0-3). Prerequisite: CUIN 6307.
Developing and directing computer and electronic information centers.
Exploration of such issues as hardware and software decision-making, local and
wide area network operation, software support, vendor relations, electronic
security, facility design, and staff development and user training.
7308: Educational Uses of Computer-Mediated Communication Cr.3.(0-3).
Prerequisite: CUIN 6320. Introduces students to the Internet and its use as an
educational resource. Introduction to a wide range of Internet tools which
allow electronic access and retrieval of information and materials. Networking
issues such as connectivity, hardware and software requirements, and software
interfaces are presented.
7311: Teaching the Language Minority Student Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6313,
CUIN 6317, or consent of instructor. Survey of sociocultural issues and
their impact on the education of language minority groups.
7312: Principles and Issues of Multilingual Education Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisite: CUIN 6313, CUIN 6317, or consent of instructor. Critical analysis
of the research literature on the principles, problems, and issues in
bilingual, English as a second language, and foreign language education.
7314: Research in Second Language Acquisition and Education Cr 3. (2-2).
Prerequisite: CUIN 6317. Investigation of recent studies on the
teaching/learning process in second languages and field methods for carrying
out those studies.
7315: Theoretical Models of Multilingual Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
consent of instructor. Critical analysis of linguistic concepts and models
applicable to education in two or more languages.
7316: Electronic Document Design and Development Cr.3.(0-3). Prerequisite: CUIN 7305.
Design and development of electronic documents. Topics include creation
of non-linear information resources, information landscaping based on new media
tools, electronic just-in-time support and training, hypermedia search and
retrieval tools, and print-based page layout.
7317: The Visual Representation of Information Cr.3.(0-3). Prerequisite: CUIN 7305.
Explores the design and development of computer-generated instructional
graphics. Students will explore and evaluate the design and creation of
graphical, iconic, and metaphoric information in interactive visual learning
environments.
7318: Current Issues in Instructional Technology I Cr.3.(3-0). Prerequisite: 15
hours in Instructional Technology (see Department for details). First semester
of a two-semester sequence covering major issues in IT with an emphasis on the
professional practice implications of current research and theory. Explores
current issues in a seminar format. Each student begins a project relevant to
career goals that brings current theory and research to bear on a significant
problem.
7319: Current Issues in Instructional Technology II Cr.3.(3-0). Prerequisite:
CUIN 7318. Second semester of a two-semester sequence that covers major issues
in IT with an emphasis on the professional practice implications of current
research and theory. Explores current issues in a seminar format. Each student
completes a project relevant to career goals that brings current theory and
research to bear on a significant problem.
7320: The Design and Development of Print-Based Educational Media Cr. 3.(3-0).
Prerequisite: CUIN 6320. Overview of desktop publishing for educators: the
basics of electronic design, a conceptual framework for understanding the
design and development of print-based educational materials, and hands-on
experience to develop production competencies.
7321: Advanced Telecomputing Applications in Education Cr.3.(3-0).
Prerequisite: CUIN 7308. Students who already possess basic telecomputing
skills will explore the latest methods of Internet connectivity, investigate
new programming options for creating on-line coursework, develop training
strategies for novice computer users, and discuss ways that schools and
businesses can provide support for their network users.
7322: Curriculum Development in Science Education Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite:
CUIN 6360. Analysis of contemporary science curricula research. Development and
use of criteria for evaluating science curricula currently in use in the area
of the student's specialization.
7323: Socio-psychological Aspects of Information Technology Cr.3.(3-0).
Prerequisite: CUIN 6320. Relates social science theories such as behaviorism,
information theory, systems theory, and the constructivism of Piaget and
Vygotsky to theories of instructional design and development such as anchored
instruction, authentic instruction and assessment, cognitive flexibility
theory, fuzzy logic theory, participatory development models, and recursive
design.
7324: Foundations of Instructional Design Cr.3.(3-0).Prerequisite: CUIN 6320.
Explores the implications of major philosophical and curriculum theory
traditions including logical and empirical positivism, postmodernism, critical
theory, cognitive and social constructivism, and natural language philosophy.
Emphasis on the impact of these traditions on areas such as design and
development, training, support, and research.
7325: Materials for Reading and Language Arts Instruction Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisite: ELED 6320 or 6305. Survey and evaluation of current instructional
materials, and development of new materials for teaching reading and language
arts.
7326: Individualizing Science Instruction Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ELED 6324,
SEDE 6324 or consent of instructor. Evaluation of approaches, programs,
and student characteristics for individualizing science instruction.
7327: Collaborative Design of Multimedia Materials Cr. 3.(3-0). Focuses on the
design of educational multimedia materials. An applications and research-based
experience for students who have completed introductory level instructional
technology courses. Main objective is to enable students to experience working
as part of a multimedia team to design an instructional package for a client.
7328: Information Technology and Teacher Education Cr.3.(3-0). Prerequisite:
CUIN 7320. Introduction to the emerging field of information technology and
teacher education with an emphasis on the scholarly and professional practice
literature. Explores the process of publishing in this field. Students
participate in the review-edit-publish process for a national publication in
the field.

of identifying, diagnosing, and correcting reading disabilities; methods and
materials useful in diagnosing and planning remediation for reading problems.

of methods and materials supporting the learning of foundational algebraic

7340: Issues in Mathematics Education Cr. 3.(3-0). Study of core instructional
approaches to mathematics education for grades K-12 and beyond.
7341: Diagnosis of Mathematics Understanding Cr. 3.(3-0). Diagnosis and
assessment of mathematics understanding using appropriate instruments and
protocols for individual and group diagnosis.
7342: Methods and Materials for Remediation in Mathematics Cr. 3. (3-0).
Prerequisite: one graduate mathematics methods course or CUIN 7341. Methods and
materials for the remediation of specific learning disabilities in mathematics
with supervised clinical experiences treating mathematics disability cases.
7343: Curriculum Alignment in Mathematics Cr. 3.(3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6360
or equivalent or consent of instructor. Development of effective techniques for
aligning mathematics curriculum with national and state standards and
evaluation requirements.
7344: Teaching Problem Solving with Computers Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: CUIN 6320,
CUIN 6345, or consent of instructor. Study of the use of structured
programming languages (e.g., Logo) and other software to teach problem solving.
Emphasis on writing structured programs.

Established and emerging theories of instructional design are explored and
evaluated. Emphasis is on the process of instructional design and the
underlying theories that guide the design and development process. Established
theories, based on behavioral and information processing theory, and emerging
theories based on cognitive constructivist, social constructivist, and critical
theory are examined.

7356: Issues in Distance Education Cr. 3.(3-0). Examines the concepts,
technologies and issues related to the development and delivery of distance
education. Topics include theory and history, distance education programs
throughout the world, components of a distance education system, course design
and development, technology and media, instruction and interaction, the student
and teacher, and administration and policy-making in distance education.
7357: Collaborative Development of Multimedia Materials Cr. 3.(3-0).
Prerequisite: CUIN 7327. Focuses on the development of educational multimedia
materials.An applications and research-based experience for students who have
completed CUIN 7327. The main objective of this course is to enable students to
experience working as part of a multimedia team to develop a computer-based
instructional package for a client.

consent of instructor. Problems in curriculum theory, including the role of the
teacher in the curriculum, problems of curriculum design and interrelationships
between current issues in curriculum and societal forces.
7363: Sociocultural and Psychological Bases of Reading Instruction Cr. 3.
(3-0). Prerequisites: ELED 6320 and three hours of approved graduate credit in
reading or concurrent enrollment. Examines instructional implications of
sociocultural, psychological, orthographic, and language factors underlying the
development of reading ability in preschoolers through young adults.

developmental stages and environmental factors involved in early childhood
