Admission Requirements

A faculty committee within the department of interest will evaluate applicants to the Ph.D. program on several factors, including academic achievement as evidenced by transcripts from each college or university the applicant has attended, standardized test scores, career objectives, research interests, and the department's ability to match the student's aims and the available faculty. The faculty committee in each department may request additional information from the applicant and may specify additional requirements. All applicants, however, must submit a completed application along with the following materials for evaluation for admission to the Ph.D. program:

  1. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work completed.

  2. Three letters of reference from academic or professional sources familiar with the applicant's background.

  3. Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and/or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores.

  4. Resumé or curriculum vitae and a statement of academic goals and research interests.

  5. International applicants must also submit a score of at least 620 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), as well as a Letter of Financial Backing and a Statement of Understanding. The latter two forms are available from the International Section of the Office of Admissions.

International applicants who speak English as their native language, have earned a U.S. high school diploma, or have completed a prior college degree in the U.S. are exempt from the TOEFL requirement. TOEFL scores may not be more than two years old at the time of application.

  6. The College of Business Administration application fee. For international applicants, there is an additional evaluation fee required by the Office of International Admissions. Payment must be made via personal U.S. check or U.S. money order (payable to the University of Houston) and included with the application form.

Only applicants whose application and international evaluation fees have been paid will be reviewed by the department. Applicants must comply with all college and university application requirements, including application deadlines. Conditional admission to the Ph.D. program is not possible. For specific information about admission requirements for the Ph.D. program, candidates should contact the department of interest.
