Student Services Concourse
The CBA Student Services Concourse is a center for student assistance in the
areas of academic advising, admissions and academic records, career services,
and scholarships and special programs.
Office of Student Services

The Office of Student Services (OSS) within the College of Business
Administration is the administrative center for graduate admissions and
academic advising for graduate, undergraduate, and postbaccalaureate students.
The Office of Student Services staff is committed to quality student service.
It also promotes recruitment and retention programs, as well as supporting
business student organizations. Of the 16 business student organizations, three
are specifically for graduate students: Masters Network (MNET), International
MBA Society, and Black Graduate Business Association (BGBA). For questions
relating to admission or for academic advising, please contact the Office of
Student Services, 249 Melcher Hall, (713) 743-4900. Advisors are available on
an appointment basis.
Elizabeth D. Rockwell Career Services Center
 The Elizabeth D. Rockwell Career Services Center actively provides CBA students with the information, ideas, and practical skills necessary to obtain a satisfying career in today's competitive marketplace. An innovative, technology-oriented unit, the new center houses state-of-the-art computer workstations and Ethernet/data jack connection terminals. Students can access the Internet, the University Career Services, company profiles and career education resources from this location. Other features include the opportunity for students to sign-up for on-campus interviews and register their resumés from this site.
Centers for Advanced Study, Research, and Executive Development
 Five academic departments and several centers for research and advanced study and management education are contained in the college. Programs of study in the departments of Accountancy and Taxation, Decision and Information Sciences, Finance, Management, and Marketing and Entrepreneurship are described in the Areas of Concentration section.
A.A. White Dispute Resolution Institute
 The A.A. White Dispute Resolution Institute is a non-profit organization whose purposes are charitable, educational and civic. The Institute fosters public awareness and understanding of conflicts and conflict resolution, and the impact of interpersonal disputes on society. In addition, it works toward developing broader understanding and use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods. ADR processes provide assistance to the courts in encouraging the early settlement of costly litigation. The Institute is recognized nationally as the foremost dispute resolution center in designing plans which may be helpful in resolving conflicts in the most cost efficient and timely manner. Institute projects involve graduate business students whenever possible. Projects include: Mediating Employee Grievances: A Pilot Project; Resolving Disputes in Higher Education; and Dispute Resolution: A Community-wide Approach.
CBA Energy Institute
 The mission of the CBA Energy Institute is to develop a CBA-based program that focuses business school talents on the challenge of preparing energy industry executives and managers and government policy makers for more competitive global energy markets. The Institute emphasis is on regulatory frameworks that ensure commercially-successful energy projects. Because energy remains a mainstay of the nation's economic profile, the Institute is well-positioned to be at the center of this change and to become a leader among university-based energy programs in the Western Hemisphere. The Institute will be centered on three concepts: the role of government and policy models for energy management; the business/government interface; and corporate strategies and management responses to more competitive energy markets.
Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
 The mission of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI) is to organize and expand the knowledge and practice of entrepreneurship. The center also seeks to enhance the standing of the University of Houston's College of Business Administration by providing programs which will make the college the nation's leader in entrepreneurial education.
Fixed Income Research Program
 The Fixed Income Research Program (FIRP) promotes research in financial markets, with an emphasis on fixed-income securities. The focus of the program is to maintain, update, and extend the Lehman Brothers Fixed Income Database for the use of researchers in academic and non-profit institutions. The Database contains monthly pricing information on the individual bonds which
make up the family of Lehman Brothers Bond Indices. Currently, FIRP has distributed these data to over fifty universities and research institutions
throughout the world. FIRP sponsors seminars, provides faculty support, and
funds research and computer equipment purchases. Originally founded at Columbia
University, the program was housed for six years at the University of Wisconsin
before moving to the University of Houston in 1997.
Center for Global Manufacturing
 The Center for Global Manufacturing (CGM) was established in 1991 with assistance from Tenneco, Houston Lighting and Power, and Texas Commerce Bank. The CGM mission is to improve the competitiveness of U.S. manufacturing through research and executive training. Original research is conducted to identify critical requirements for excellence in manufacturing companies in the future. Special emphasis is placed on manufacturing strategies for Texas companies competing in the global economy. Research findings are presented in executive seminar programs offered jointly with the Center for Executive Development. The CGM's flagship program is a one-week executive seminar entitled: ÒManaging Productions and Operations: Strategic Approaches to Improving Productivity.Ó The program agenda includes case studies, computer exercises, and lectures on demand forecasting, quality management, manufacturing strategy, planning and scheduling, and inventory and materials management.
Center for Executive Development
 In 1948, the University of Houston established one of the early centers devoted to executive development and education. Known today as the Center for Executive Development (CED), it is one of the CBA's primary contacts with the business community and is changing the way business looks at the world. The CED provides a range of high-quality executive education, management development, and business professional training to the local, regional, national, and international business communities.
Information Systems Research Center
 The Information Systems Research Center (ISRC) is a forum for the interchange of ideas among information technology professionals in the academic and professional communities. The objectives of the ISRC are the training, development, and continuing education of information systems (IS)
professionals; research in the development and utilization of IS in organizations; the promotion of interaction among IS professionals and
academicians; and the education and development of IS academicians.
Southwest Center for International Business
 The Southwest Center for International Business (SCIB) serves as the focal point for the international activities of the College of Business Administration. The mission of the SCIB is to cultivate, facilitate, and support activities which further the internationalization objectives of the college. These activities include, but are not limited to, student and faculty exchanges, study abroad programs, training, research, and joint ventures with other institutions. The SCIB is the link between the CBA and international business and education communities.
University of Houston Small Business Development Center
 The University of Houston Small Business Development Center (SBDC) is a nonprofit professional management consulting service funded by the CBA and the U.S. Small Business Administration. The center provides free business consulting to the small business community including assistance with accounting, financial analysis, exporting, management, and marketing. The University of Houston SBDC also offers low-cost workshops, conferences, and courses ranging from advanced seminars aimed at the experienced small business owner to introductory courses for those planning to start a business.
The Center also offers specialized assistance in international trade,
government procurement, and manufacturing through its International Trade
Center, Texas Information Procurement Service (TIPS), and Texas Manufacturing
Assistance Center (TMAC).
Institute for Business, Ethics, and Public Issues
 The Institute for Business, Ethics, and Public Issues (IBEPI) provides managers, scholars and concerned citizens with a forum for developing a shared understanding of the many complex and challenging social issues facing business today and examining possible resolutions for such issues. Thus, the Institute develops programs, seminars, and publications utilizing academic, business, public interest and other resources available in the greater Houston community and elsewhere. Such projects enhance teaching and research activities of involved faculty members and contribute to the education of tomorrow's business leaders.
IBEPI is also the facilitating institution for the Greater Houston Business
Ethics Roundtable (GHBER), which is dedicated to promoting ethical business
practices. GHBER membership includes major corporations, nonprofits, and

Institute for Corporate Environmental Management
 The Institute for Corporate Environmental Management was established to foster organizational competitiveness through effective management of the environmental issues facing industry. The institute provides: - executive education and training programs to help management at all levels of operation better understand environmental issues with which they are confronted and the array of possible strategies and actions they can apply to the management of those issues;
- information services as needed in the institute's programs and by its members;
- applied research efforts to develop better environmental management tools;
- advisory services to business organizations and public policy-makers interested in improving the effectiveness of their environmental management strategies; and
- curriculum support in the development of environmental management programs in the College of Business Administration, as well as environmental education programs in the schools (K-12).
Institute for Diversity and Cross-Cultural Management
 The Institute for Diversity and Cross-Cultural Management operates as the research and development arm of the Center for Executive Development in the CBA. The institute was created to address changes in the world marketplace, changes in the current and future demographics of the labor market, individual differences in the work force, and the increasing globalization of business.
Institute for Health Care Marketing
 The Institute for Health Care Marketing produces academic studies for journals and technical reports for health-care providers. Its focus is on advising the marketers of health care, particularly preventive care, on how to be more effective.
Research and Instructional Computing Services
 The Research and Instructional Computing Services (RICS) provides computing support for students, faculty, and staff in classroom instruction, research efforts, and college administration. RICS offers the following facilities and services:
- Student labs with personal computers for course work assignments and
communication with the central computer;
- Software support for undergraduate and graduate students in course
assignments;
- Software library and documentation support for developed application
packages; and
- Hands-on workshops for training in computer/network use, as well as in the
major application software packages.
