General Information

The College of Business Administration offers master's degree programs that have an emphasis in business and administration, and a doctoral program in which students may concentrate in one of several business administration disciplines.

Admission to the M.B.A. program is open to qualified applicants who have bachelor's degrees from recognized colleges or universities, regardless of the undergraduate field of study. Because Houston is a dynamic business center, many students choose to pursue a full-time career and to enroll in the M.B.A. program on a part-time, evening basis. To accommodate students choosing this option, the college offers all the graduate courses required for the degree in the evening.

A number of joint master's degree programs are offered which may be pursued on a part- or full-time basis. Other programs at the University of Houston that may be combined with the Master of Business Administration include the Doctor of Jurisprudence (M.B.A./J.D.), the Master of Arts in Spanish (M.B.A./M.A.), the Master of Hospitality Management (M.B.A./M.H.M.), the Master of Industrial Engineering (M.B.A./M.I.E.), and the Master of Social Work (M.B.A./M.S.W.). The Master of Business Administration may be combined with the Master of International Management (M.B.A./M.I.M.) offered through Thunderbird, American Graduate School of International Management in Arizona.

The Master of Science in Accountancy program is for students who plan to concentrate in the fields of financial, managerial, and tax accounting. The degree provides a balanced background in a variety of business areas, as well as specific competencies in accountancy and taxation. The college structures the program so that students may have degree plans that complement their previous academic backgrounds. Students who are interested in this degree, but who have career and time constraints, may complete the program by attending it on a part-time, evening basis if they desire to do so.

The Master of Science in Administration degree prepares students to administer complex organizations in such nonbusiness areas as health care, nonprofit organizations, and the arts. The program includes core courses from the M.B.A. program and allows the student to include courses specific to the area of administration being studied. This program may be pursued on a part-time, evening basis.

The college not only offers several master's degrees, but also grants a Doctor of Philosophy degree in specific areas within business administration. The doctoral program orients students toward research and endeavors to educate teacher-scholars capable of expanding what managers know of complex organizations' administrative processes.

Students who have bachelors' degrees from recognized colleges or universities, regardless of the undergraduate field of study, may apply for admission to the Ph.D. program. Degree programs that suit the research interest of candidates are planned by graduate advisory committees within students' major areas. Students consult with the Ph.D. coordinators of their departments to choose their advisory committees. Although doctoral candidates have individualized degree plans, the college usually requires four years of course work, research, and teaching from all candidates who enter the program with a bachelor's degree in a nonbusiness discipline. Students who hold an M.B.A. or an M.S. in Accountancy from institutions accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business may be able to shorten the time necessary to complete the degree. The doctoral program, however, requires full-time enrollment.
